PERKINSTON – The No. 6 Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats used a 35-17 third quarter to take command and whip Mississippi Gulf Coast 86-54 here Monday night at the Weathers/Wentzell Center.
The Lady Bobcats, winners of six straight, are now 12-2 overall and 5-0 in the MACJC South Division.
Jones held MGCCC scoreless for the first 4:05 of the game.
Chrystal Ezechukwu's (Stone Mountain, Georgia) basket with 4:08 showing gave the Lady Bobcats a 10-0 lead. MGCCC cut the lead to 12-9 after the first quarter.
An
Alexis Tolefree (Conway, Arkansas) 3-pointer gave the Lady Bobcats a 24-11 lead with 4:01 left in the first half. But the Lady Bulldogs fought back to within 28-22 at halftime.
It would be all Lady Bobcats in the second half.
A Tolefree 3-pointer with 5:20 left in the third quarter gave Jones a 47-30 lead.
Camryn London's (Birmingham, Alabama) basket with 2:50 showing made it 57-34. The Lady Bobcats led 63-39 after three quarters.
JCJC's longest lead of the game came when
Jaresa Brooks (North Forrest) made two free throws with 5:02 remaining to give the Lady Bobcats a 76-42 lead.
Tolefree led JCJC with 23 points.
ZaKyia Weathersby (Collins) came off the bench to score 15 points.
Nique Cherry (Heidelberg) added 12 and Brooks finished with 11.
Cherry had 15 rebounds, Ezechukwu had 12 and Weathersby finished with 10. Cherry and
Mackenzie Thompson (East Rankin Academy) each had 4 assists and
Breonca Ducksworth (West Jones) had 3 steals.
The Lady Bobcats were 32-of-76 from the field (6-of-25 from 3-point range) for 42 percent. Jones was 16-of-27 from the free throw line and pulled down 59 rebounds.
Keira Williams had 16 points to lead MGCCC and Azaria Howard added 13.
The Lady Bulldogs are 5-8 overall and 0-5 in division play.
Jones returns home to A.B. Howard Gymnasium to meet East Central at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The game will air on
www.jcjc.tv.
MGCCC travels to Pearl River on Thursday.
