SUMMIT – Jones County Junior College head coach Steve Buckley said his Bobcats would not overlook winless Southwest.
The second-year head Bobcat proved to prophetic as JCJC routed the Bears 61-20 here Thursday night at John I. Hurst Stadium.
It was the fourth straight win for the Bobcats, who have outscored their opponents 180-56 during that stretch.
It was the second most points ever scored in a game by the Bobcats. JCJC beat Southwest 65-21 in 1993.
Jones scored on a pass interception on the second play of the game and would hold a 58-13 lead late in the second quarter.
With the running clock rule in place in the second half, JCJC ran 33 plays from scrimmage, compared to only five for Southwest.
The Bobcats are now 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the MACJC South Division. The Bears drop to 0-5, 0-2.
JCJC set the tone quickly when Fred Peters (Columbia) intercepted a pass on Southwest's second play from scrimmage and ran it back 18 yards for a touchdown. Mike Kroeze's (Madison Central) extra point made it 7-0 with 14:43 left in the first quarter.
The Bears came right back and went 77 yards in four plays. Quarterback Juwan Adams connected with Anthony Jones on a 51-yard touchdown pass. Gunar Robinson's extra point made it 7-7 with 13:09 left in the first quarter.
JCJC took the ensuing kickoff and quickly went 67 yards in five plays. Scott Phillips (South Jones) took a handoff and ran to his left for a 17-yard touchdown run. Kroeze's kick made it 14-7 with 11:23 left in the first quarter.
But Southwest would go 60 yards in six plays on its next possession. Chase Hughes powered his way in from 3 yards out for the score. The extra point attempt failed and JCJC led 14-13 with 8:13 left in the first quarter.
Southwest was forced to punt on its next possession. Robinson dropped the snap in the end zone and was tackled by Davis Harrison (Lamar School) for a safety. That gave JCJC a 16-13 lead with 4:55 left in the first quarter.
Jones would take the free kick and march 67 yards in eight plays. On a fourth and 2 play, quarterback Detric Hawthorn (Collins) would keep the ball and score on a 31-yard run. Kroeze's extra point made it 23-13 with 2:25 left in the first quarter.
On JCJC's next possession, the Bobcats marched 60 yards in four plays. Phillips would run up the middle for a 42-yard touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. Kroeze's extra point made it 30-13 with 14:52 left in the first half.
On the next kickoff, JCJC's Elijah Rogers (Jackson Callaway) came up with a big hit to force a fumble. Jordyn Bowlin (Starkville) scooped it up and returned it 17 yards for a touchdown. Kroeze's PAT made it 37-13 with 14:43 left in the second quarter.
Two possessions later, JCJC began a drive at the Southwest 40. Facing fourth and 2 at the 32, Weaver threw a quick pass to his left to Kendall Parham (Oak Grove). Parham outran the defense into the end zone for a touchdown. Kroeze's extra point gave the Bobcats a 44-13 lead with 9:49 left in the first half.
On Southwest's next possession, the Bears would fumble and Brandon Young (West Jones) recovered. He returned it 25 yards to the Southwest 17.
Two plays later, DeShawn Smith (Brooksville, Florida) scored on a 5-yard run. Kroeze's kick made it 51-13 with 6:53 left in the second quarter.
Jonnas Spivey (Bay Springs) would then return a punt 32 yards to the Southwest 20-yard line.
Six plays later, Rashaud Green (Bassfield) scored on a fourth and goal play at the 1. Kroeze's extra point gave JCJC a 58-13 lead with 1:42 left in the second quarter.
Southwest would then drive 73 yards in six plays.
Adams connected with Jones on a 30-yard touchdown pass on the final play of the half. Robinson's kick made it 58-20.
The Bobcats took the second half kickoff and moved their own 30 to the Bear 29 in nine plays. Kroeze would drill a 46-yard field goal with 8:07 left in the third quarter to end the scoring.
Phillips ended the game with 80 yards on eight carries and Hawthorn had three carries for 50 yards. Weaver was 12-of-18 for 131 yards. Harry Ballard (Florissant, Missouri) had three catches for 55 yards and Parham had three receptions for 48 yards.
Defensively, Peters had 11 tackles and the interception. Bowlin had 8 tackles, 1 forced fumble and the fumble recovery return. Rogers had 5 tackles and the forced fumble. Emanuel Barber (Chicago, Illinois), Wardalis Ducksworth (Mize) Semaj Thomas (Fort Worth, Texas) and Edward Haralson (Yazoo County) each had a sack and Barber also had a tackle for loss.
JCJC outgained Southwest, 404-230.
JCJC will now host East Central at 7 p.m. on Oct. 5. The game will air on www.jcjc.tv and the Jones County Junior College Facebook Live page with Mark Easley and Chris Robinson on the call.
Southwest will host Pearl River on Oct. 7 in its Homecoming contest.
