ELLISVILLE – Four new members have been selected for enshrinement into the Jones County Junior College Sports Hall of Fame.
William T. "Bill" Barry, Dr. Gene Lasley, Misty M. Moore and Sandra Sumrall comprise the class of 2017.
There will be an induction banquet at 5 p.m. on Sept. 7 at the A.B. Howard Gymnasium. The group will then be recognized at halftime of that evening's football game between the Bobcats and Mississippi Delta.
There are now 45 members in the JCJC Sports Hall of Fame.
William T. "Bill" Barry
Barry came to JCJC from Zach Huggins High School in Quitman where he was a member of the 1967 Choctaw Conference championship team.
He was a standout in football and track for the Bobcats.
He played on JCJC's 1968 state and national championship team and was named All-State and All-American in 1969 as a wide receiver. He won the state 440-yard dash in 1969 and also ran a leg in the mile, 880-yard and 440-yard relay.
Barry signed with the University of Mississippi and played for the Rebels in 1971 and 1972 for John Vaught and Billy Kinard, respectively. He was a wide receiver/wingback for Ole Miss and helped the Rebels to a 10-2 record and a 41-18 win over Georgia Tech in the 1971 Peach Bowl.
He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1973, but chose a career in banking and finance.
Barry worked for Citizens National Bank and joined the Mississippi Business Finance Corporation and was named Executive Director in 1988. MBFC assisted JCJC in bond financing for capital improvements and refunding.
Barry died on Dec. 31, 2015, after a courageous fight with lymphoma cancer. At the time of his death, he was President-Elect of the Ole Miss M-Club and in 2016 was recognized with the George Lotterhos Service Award.
Barry spoke positively about his time at JCJC, having great respect for Jones, his teammates and Coach Sim Cooley.
Barry was preceded in death by his father, John Barry. He is survived by his wife, Amy, son Brent Barry, daughter Dr. Lauren Barry Versteegh, stepson Joe Majors; his mother, Tommye Lue Dabbs Barry, brothers Rick and Lou, and three grandchildren, Faith, Camryn and Blake.
Dr. Gene Lasley
Dr. Lasley played at Soddy-Daisy Consolidated High School in Soddy, Tennessee, before coming to JCJC.
He played football and ran track for the Bobcats.
He was a guard and was named All-American and All-State on the 1951 state championship team. It could be said that Dr. Lasley was the top player in the state in 1951 because he was the only one from Mississippi to be named All-American.
He ran on the Jones mile relay team which won the state meet. He also ran the 100-yard dash and threw the shot put.
After JCJC, he attended Mississippi Southern College (University of Southern Mississippi) and was a starting guard on the 1952 football team that participated in the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas.
Dr. Lasley left USM and went to Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1954, his master's in 1956 and an honorary doctorate in 1976. He then attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He served five years as Youth for Christ director in the states of Illinois and Washington.
Dr. Lasley would serve as pastor of Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church in Gray, Tennessee, from 1963-2009. Buffalo Ridge is the oldest church in Tennessee, having been founded in 1779.
During his ministry at Buffalo Ridge, Sunday School attendance grew from 135 in 1963 to a record 766 in 1984. The church experienced high attendance days of 1,400 and 1,500.
He served on the Ambassador Baptist College Board of Directors in Lattimore, North Carolina, for many years. The men's dormitory at Ambassador Baptist College was named "Gene Lasley Hall" in his honor in 2009.
He also serves on the Pastoral Advisory Committee for Congressman Phil Roe in the first district of Tennessee.
After his retirement, Dr. Lasley has remained active in preaching at local Baptist churches and teaching in Bible colleges.
Dr. Lasley is married to Ellen Lasley.
Misty M. Moore
Moore was a standout tennis player at JCJC in 1995-96.
Moore, a Northeast Jones High School graduate, was an MACJC/Region 23 champion in No. 1 doubles in 1995 and was a member of the first JCJC women's team to go to nationals in Arizona.
In 1996, she was a state/region champion in No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles. She was undefeated in doubles that year. The team finished seventh in the national tournament, the highest finish ever for a Mississippi tennis team. Moore finshed 21
st.
She was named JCJC's Most Valuable Player for women's tennis in 1996.
Moore began working fulltime after leaving JCJC and has been actively involved in the community.
She was a four-year member of the Southern Baptist Convention Disaster Relief team.
She is involved with Giggles – Girls in God Growing Loving Eating Sharing – for the past four years. She has invited girls in grades 4-6 into her home once a month for Bible studies and once a month for service projects in the community. Giggles adopts a family each year at Christmas.
She is a volunteer at the Dream Center in Ellisville, feeding over 40 youngsters on Tuesday nights with her family. She is a volunteer at Glory House with her family and Giggles.
Moore has been on a mission trip to England to share God's love with members of the Jones County Baptist Association.
For two years at Journey Church in Laurel, she has worked at their Base Camp program during a week in the summer. They helped foster three girls in the past year. She has taught children at her church and taken them to church camps.
Moore has held Mother/Daughter Retreats at Adventure Lake and Father/Daughter Fishing events.
Moore also serves at The Circle Church in Ellisville. That church and Giggles fed over 200 youngsters at Dubose Park. She has taken children to volunteer at the annual Jones County Heart Walk each year.
Her grandfather, O.E. Myers, taught at JCJC for several years.
She is married to her husband, Robby, and they have two children, Brooke and Shai.
Sandra Sumrall
Sandra Wells Sumrall served as head coach of the JCJC women's basketball team from 1999-2015.
She guided the Lady Bobcats to MACJC championships in 2001, 2009, 2010 and 2015. She owned a 239-144 coaching record at JCJC.
She led JCJC to regional play in 2001 and the South Division crown that year. They were MACJC runnerup in 2003-04 and advanced to the regional semifinals in 2008-09.
Prior to coaching at Jones, Sumrall was the junior high and assistant high school girls' basketball coach at West Jones and became the head coach of the Lady Mustangs in 1982. She coached at West Jones from 1982-99 and lead the team to the Overall State 4A championship in 1997. She had a 364-136 record at West Jones.
She led the Lady Mustangs to five Southern Athletic Conference championships, six district championships, one South State 4A championship and one Overall State 4A championship. She led West Jones to five state tourney appearances.
She was named SAC Coach of the Year three times and the Laurel-Jones County Coach of the Year once.
She had two Mississippi Gatorade Players of the Year, an SEC Player of the Year, a Kodak All-American, a player on the 1992 USA women's team in the Barcelona Summer Olympics and a player on the WNBA's Portland Blazers.
She graduated from Northeast Jones High School where she played varsity basketball for four years. After graduation, she attended the University of Mississippi where she received scholarships from the Lady Rebel basketball and volleyball teams.
She received her Bachelor of Science degree in physical education at Ole Miss and her master's degree from William Carey University.
Sumrall is married to Rick Sumrall. They have two daughters, Brittany Johnson, who is married to Lance, and Chelsey Green, who is married to Chris, and four grandchildren: Walker Johnson, Beckett Johnson, Canton Green and Colson Green.
