SCOOBA – Jones County Junior College held a 28-14 lead over No. 2 East Mississippi early in the third quarter.
But the Lions grabbed the momentum with a blocked extra point return and scored the game's final 26 points en route to a 47-34 victory over the Bobcats here Thursday night at a windy Sullivan-Windham Field.
The game featured big plays by both teams.
Quarterback Detric Hawthorn (Collins) threw for 179 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 27 yards. Quarterback Chris Weaver (Bay Minette, Alabama) threw for 128 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 60 yards.
Wide receiver Harry Ballard (Florissant, Missouri), a Missouri commit, had two receptions for 129 yards and two scores. Running back Scott Phillips (South Jones), an Ole Miss commit, rushed 19 times for 91 yards and a touchdown and wide receiver Kendall Parham (Oak Grove), a Louisiana-Lafayette commit, had seven catches for 58 yards.
Safety Deontai Williams (Jacksonville, Florida), a University of Florida commit, had 11 tackles and linebacker Brad Zaffram (Buffalo, New York) had nine stops. Defensive backs Tyrek Moody (Petal) and Derric Hawthorn (Collins) had pass interceptions.
Jones had 21 first downs, 201 yards rushing and 307 yards passing. The Bobcats had 79 snaps for 506 yards.
East Mississippi had 26 first downs, 148 yards rushing and 418 yards passing. The Lions ran 83 plays for 566 yards.
EMCC struck first when quarterback Lindsay Scott Jr. connected on a 49-yard touchdown pass to Dontario Drummond to end a 73-yard, eight-play drive. Taylor Crabtree's conversion made it 7-0 with 2:39 left in the first quarter.
But Jones responded immediately.
After taking over at the 20 following the kickoff, Weaver found Ballard for a 78-yard scoring strike. Mike Kroeze's extra point made it 7-7 with 1:46 left in the first quarter.
On JCJC's next possession, the Bobcats drove from their own 20 to the EMCC 23. Facing a fourth and 7, the Bobcats went with a trick play. Detric Hawthorn tossed a backwards pass to Jeriko Morris (Crystal Springs). But Morris's pass attempt fell incomplete and the Lions took over.
EMCC then drove 77 yards in 10 plays. Scott, who transferred to EMCC from LSU earlier this month, tossed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Dorrean McLaurin. Crabtree's kick made it 14-7 with 6:57 left in the second quarter.
The Bobcats took the ensuing kickoff and drove from its 25 to the EMCC 1. But Phillips was dropped for a 1-yard loss on fourth and goal.
But Moody then intercepted a Scott pass at the Lion 23 and returned it to the 9.
On the next play, Detric Hawthorn found Morris in the end zone for the score. Kroeze's kick made it 14-14 with 43 seconds left in the half.
EMCC would attempt a 28-yard field goal on the last play of the half, but the snap was bobbled and holder Grayson Pontius was tackled for a loss.
The Bobcats came out quickly in the second half.
Facing a fourth and 1 at the Lion 46, Phillips took a handoff, broke through the right side of the line and went the distance for a touchdown to end a 55-yard, four-play drive. Kroeze's PAT made it 21-14 with 13:09 left in the third quarter.
Jones then forced a three and out and took over at its own 49.
The Bobcats ran the 'flea-flicker' with Detric Hawthorn handing the ball to Phillips, who flipped it back to Detric Hawthorn, who tossed to an open Ballard for a 51-yard touchdown. Kroeze's kick made it 28-14 with 11:39 left in the third quarter.
JCJC then got another three and out and took over at the EMCC 41. But the Bobcats could not move and the Lions took over at its own 28 following a punt.
East Mississippi would take only three plays to go 72 yards. Scott connected with Mike Williams on a 46-yard scoring play. Crabtree's kick made it 28-21 with 8:27 left in the third quarter.
The Bobcats would then go 64 yards in seven plays on its next possession.
Weaver hit Diondre Champaigne (Labson, South Carolina) on a 9-yard fade route for the score. But EMCC blocked the extra point and Denzel Bonner returned it around 80 yards for a two-point play. That made it 34-23 with 5:37 left in the third quarter.
On its next possession, the Bobcats went from their own 38 to the EMCC 20. But Kroeze's 37-yard field goal attempt was off to the right.
The Lions took over on its own 20. Facing a third and 10, Scott hit Kirk Merritt for an 80-yard touchdown pass. Crabtree's kick made it 34-30 with 2:02 left in the third quarter.
The Bobcats fumbled the ensuing kickoff and EMCC recovered.
However, Derric Hawthorn came up with an interception at the Bobcat 20 and returned it to the EMCC 43.
But EMCC's Joseph Anderson would intercept a Weaver pass and give the Lions the ball at the Bobcat 48.
Four plays later, Tyrell Price scored on an 8-yard run. Crabtree's kick made it 37-34 with 14:05 to play in the game.
Two possessions later, the Lions took over at the Bobcat 15 following a 10-yard punt into the win.
Four plays later, Merritt, who has been at Oregon and Texas A&M, scored on a 1-yard run. Crabtree's PAT made it 44-34 with 8:52 left.
JCJC turned the ball over on downs and the Lions took over at the Bobcat 38.
EMCC moved to a first and goal at the Bobcat 3, but Jones stiffened and forced Crabtree to kick a 24-yard field goal with 5:07 left.
The Bobcats had one more possession, but would turn the ball over on downs.
