ELLISVILLE – Eighth-rated Jones County Junior College will be playing for the MACJC Tournament championship Thursday.
The Bobcats used six 3-pointers from
Maurice Dunlap (Amanda Elzy) and beat Holmes, 87-72, here Wednesday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium in the tournament semifinals.
The Bobcats will face Northeast at 7:30 p.m. for the men's title. The Tigers edged Southwest 91-88 in the other semifinal game.
The Bobcats are now 24-1 and will compete in the Region 23 Tournament March 7-10 at Mississippi College in Clinton. The JCJC men's team will play on March 8 in a first-round game.
Dunlap converted a pair of four-point pays as the Bobcats gained control in the first half.
Dunlap made a four-point play with 6:34 left in the first half to give Jones a 29-24 lead. He hit a 3-pointer to make it 39-27 with 4:14 showing.
Omar Steele's (Laurel) free throw gave JCJC a 42-30 lead with 3:25 to play, but Holmes closed the lead to 42-36 at halftime.
The Bulldogs continued their streak in the second half. Keith Gilmore's basket with 17:55 left capped a 12-0 run and gave Holmes its only lead of the game at 44-42.
The Bobcats then went on a 12-0 run of its own and went ahead 54-44 with 14:14 to play when
David Davis (Purvis) converted a 3-point play.
The closest Holmes got after that was 60-54 with 10:36 left when D'Michael Stribling.
Dunlap's free throw with 1:00 to play gave Jones it longest lead at 87-70
Dunlap had 23 points to lead the Bobcats, while
Leito Holloway (Charlotte, North Carolina) added 14.
Tristin Walley (Hattiesburg) and
Enrique Milton (Jackson Provine) had 11 each.
Walley had 10 rebounds and
Marsellis Purvis (Brooklyn, New York) added 9.
Rickey Holden had 3 steals.
Justin Johnson had 15 for Holmes, 16-9, while Trevais Spencer added 11 and Mikkel Norment finished with 10.
The Bobcats were 28-of-64 from the field, including 8-of-23 from 3-point range, for 44 percent. They were 23-of-27 from the foul line.
Holmes was 24-of-66 from the floor, including 3-of-18 from 3-point range, for 36 percent. The Bulldogs were 21-of-28 from the foul line.
Each team finished with 43 rebounds and 18 turnovers.
