Late surge leads No. 17 Lady Bobcats past Hinds

ELLISVILLE – The 17th-ranked Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats outscored Hinds Community College 14-6 over the final 3:00 and posted a 75-65 victory here Monday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasum.
It was the 11th straight win for Jones.
The Lady Bobcats are now 17-1 overall, 8-1 in the MACJC South Division and are tied for first place with Copiah-Lincoln.
It was a hard-fought, but solid win for JCJC.
Hinds took a 12-7 lead with 3:15 showing in the first quarter when Octavia Barnes scored.
But JCJC scored eight straight points to end the quarter with K.K. Tassin (Terry) hitting a 3-pointer with :02 left to give Jones a 15-12 lead.
Tassin then hit two consecutive 3-pointers to start the second quarter, giving JCJC a 21-12 lead. Hinds' Twila Hill hit a layup to end the 14-0 run.
The Lady Bulldogs had a 16-5 run and took a 28-26 lead 1:33 left when Zvaire Ewing converted a 3-point play. JCJC's Myyah West (Prentiss) scored with 1:05 showing to knot the game at 28-28 at halftime.
Hinds came out quickly in the second half and took its longest lead of the game at 37-31 with 7:02 left in the third quarter when Hill scored. But the Lady Bobcats would come back and take a 50-44 lead with 1:15 left in the third quarter when Alexis Tolefree (Conway, Arkansas) hit a 3-pointer.
JCJC led 52-48 after three quarters.
Hinds pulled within 61-59 with 3:43 remaining in the game when Barnes scored.
But Tolefree hit a 3-pointer and a layup, West made two free throws and Tolefree added another 3-pointer with just 1:04 left to cap a 10-0 run and give the Lady Bobcats a 71-61 advantage.
Tolefree led the Lady Bobcats with 28 points with 25 of those coming in the second half, including 17 of those in the final quarter. She had six 3-pointers. Tassin finished with 14 points and West had 12.
Hillary Kemp had 21 for Hinds, while Barnes had 12.
The Lady Bulldogs are 13-5 overall, 5-4 in the division.
The Lady Bobcats host Pearl River at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The game will air on www.jcjc.tv.
Hinds entertains Copiah-Lincoln on Thursday.
