RIDGELAND – The Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats will play for its second straight MACJC/Region 23 Tournament championship here Sunday afternoon.
JCJC advanced to the title game by edging Mississippi Gulf Coast 4-3 in penalty kicks here Saturday evening at Freedom Ridge Park.
The game ended in a 1-1 tie after two overtimes.
The Lady Bobcats will face 16
th-ranked and unbeaten Holmes at 4 p.m. Sunday for the championship. Holmes, 13-0-1, defeated Northwest 3-1 in the other semifinal game. JCJC dropped a 3-2 decision to Holmes on Sept. 27.
The winner of the championship game will host an NJCAA District H playoff game next week.
MGCCC took a 1-0 lead when Jess Shepherd scored at 14:26.
It stayed that way until the second half when JCJC's
Aimee Durn (Watford, England) scored on a penalty kick at 62:43 to tie it at 1-1.
Neither team could score in the two, 10-minute overtime periods.
Shepherd and Durn each missed on the first penalty kick.
MGCCC's Erin Longsden and JCJC's
Anna Brice Taylor (Sacred Heart) both converted on the next kicks. MGCCC's Curissa Beatty and JCJC's
Parker Welch (Brandon) made the next kicks and MGCCC's Summer Hansen and JCJC's
Erica Gaddie (West Lauderdale) also converted.
MGCCC's L.T. Massey then missed and JCJC's
Hannah Sanford (Richland) scored to end the game.
Mia Holmes (Brandon) was in goal for the entire game for JCJC.
The game officially is recorded as a tie and the Lady Bobcats advance on penalty kicks.
JCJC is now 8-2-2 overall.
MGCCC ends the season at 7-5-3.
On the men's side, Pearl River beat East Central 3-0 and Mississippi Gulf Coast whipped Itawamba, 7-2.
PRCC will face MGCCC at 1 p.m. Sunday for the title.
