ELLISVILLE – The Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats will defend their MACJC/Region 23 soccer championship at the state tournament this weekend.
Head coach
Dolores Deasley's Lady Bobcats will meet Mississippi Gulf Coast at 5 p.m. on Saturday in the semifinals at Freedom Ridge Park in Ridgeland. MGCCC won 3-2 over Itawamba in overtime in a first-round playoff game on Wednesday in Fulton.
JCJC defeated MGCCC 2-1 on Sept. 1 at home and 2-0 at Perkinston on Oct. 3.
No. 16 Holmes (12-0-1) – the tournament host – plays Northwest (11-5) at 3 p.m. Northwest stunned previously unbeaten Pearl River 1-0 in overtime earlier this week in a first-round game.
The two winners will meet for the championship at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
The Lady Bobcats (8-2-1) have been led in scoring this season by freshmen
Aimee Durn (Watford, England) and
Mikayla Banks (Vicksburg). Durn has nine goals and seven assists for 25 points, which is third in the state, and Banks has 10 goals for 20 points, which ranks fourth in the state.
Freshman
Mary Margaret Parker (Sacred Heart) has five goals and two assists and sophomore
Judith Verdaguer (Barcelona, Spain) has four goals and four assists for 12 points. Freshman
Anna Kate Howard (South Jones) has two goals and four assists for eight points and freshman
Zakiah Almatrood (Biloxi) has two goals and three assists for seven points.
Sophomores
Mia Holmes (Brandon) and
Caroline Runion (Madison Central) have been in goal all season for the Lady Bobcats.
The winner of the tournament will host an NJCAA District H playoff game the following week.
On the men's side, Pearl River plays East Central at 11 a.m. and Itawamba plays Mississippi Gulf Coast at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the semifinal. The men's championship will be at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Freedom Ridge Park is located at 235 School Street in Ridgeland.
