POPLARVILLE – The 14
th-ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats had its most productive offensive output of the season here Saturday afternoon at Dobie Holden Stadium.
The Bobcats piled up 609 yards of total offense and defeated Pearl River Community College 52-31 in the 87
th annual "Catfight."
JCJC's sixth straight victory sets up a major showdown next week in Ellisville.
The Bobcats will host No. 7 Hinds in a battle of MACJC South Division unbeatens. The Bobcats are 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the division. The Eagles are 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the division after a 34-17 win over East Central on Thursday.
Kickoff is at 2 p.m. on Oct. 21 at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field and it will be Homecoming on the JCJC campus.
In Saturday's shootout, the heroes were many for the Bobcats.
Quarterback
Chris Weaver (Bay Minette, Alabama) was 20-24-0 for 271 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for two more scores. Wide receiver
Kendall Parham (Oak Grove) had six receptions for 174 yards, including touchdown catches of 93 and 78 yards. Running back
Scott Phillips (South Jones) rushed for 64 yards and running back
DeShawn Smith (Brooksville, Florida) had 63 yards rushing, including a 12-yard touchdown run.
Defensively, linebacker
Derric Hawthorn (Collins) and defensive back
Fred Peters (Columbia) each had 8 tackles. Tackle
De'Shondrick Foxworth (East Marion) had 5 tackles, 1 sack and 1 tackle for loss. Linebacker
Jordyn Bowlin (Starkville) had 4 tackles and one tackle for loss and end
Wardalis Ducksworth (Mize) had 4 tackles and 1 sack. Tackle
Jordan Beaton (Harrison Central) also had a sack, while linebacker
Brad Zaffram (Buffalo, New York) and tackle
Dashawn Crawford (Bay Springs) each had a tackle for loss.
Pearl River quarterback Markevion Quinn gave the Bobcats fits. He rushed 19 times for 203 yards and four touchdowns.
On its first possession, the Bobcats drove from their own 18-yard line to the PRCC 24. But Weaver fumbled trying to gain extra yardage and the Wildcats recovered.
On the very next play, Quinn kept the ball and raced 76 yards for a touchdown. Mark Johnson's extra point made it 7-0 with 9:35 left in the first quarter.
The Bobcat defense would set up its first score.
Safety
Deontai Williams (Jacksonville, Florida) got the first of his two pass interceptions on the day and returned it from his own 42 to the Wildcat 44.
On the next play, quarterback
Detric Hawthorn (Collins) was rushed, scrambled around and eventually found tight end
Chancie Tidwell (Clinton). Tidwell took the pass and made his way into the end zone to complete the 44-yard touchdown play.
Mike Kroeze's (Madison Central) extra point made it 7-7 with 5:43 left in the first quarter.
The Wildcats would then go 69 yards in two plays after the JCJC kickoff.
This time, Quinn would score on a 59-yard run. Johnson's extra point gave PRCC a 14-7 lead with 4:53 left in the first quarter.
Jones would take over on its own 22 after the PRCC kickoff.
Two plays later, Hawthorn hit Parham, who would take it the distance from 78 yards away. Kroeze's extra point tied it at 14-14 with 3:47 left in the first quarter.
On PRCC's next drive, the Wildcats drove from their own 45 to the Bobcat 19 in nine plays. The drive stalled and Johnson kicked a 37-yard field goal to give Pearl River a 17-14 lead with 14:08 left in the first half.
JCJC took over on its own 3 after the PRCC kickoff.
Facing a third and 6 at its own 7, Weaver connected with Parham, who outran the defense for a 93-yard touchdown. Kroeze's kick gave the Bobcats the lead for good at 21-17 with 13:16 left in the first half.
The Bobcats started its next drive at its own 4 following a Pearl River punt.
Jones would then drive 96 yards in 11 plays with Weaver scoring on a 1-yard keeper. Weaver's 39-yard pass to
Jonnas Spivey (Bay Springs) was the big play of the drive. Kroeze's extra point gave the Bobcats a 28-17 lead with 6:26 left in the first half.
The Bobcats, who had 354 yards passing in the first half, would go to the ground attack in the second half.
JCJC took the second half kickoff and went 75 yards in 10 plays – all on the ground – with Smith scoring on a 12-yard run. Kroeze's PAT made it 35-17 with 9:32 left in the third quarter.
Pearl River would come right back and go 63 yards in nine plays. Quinn scored on a 13-yard run on a fourth and 1 play. Johnson's extra point made it 35-24 with 5:35 left in the third quarter.
Jones would quickly answer and go 65 yards in six plays. Weaver's 3-yard run ended the drive and Kroeze's conversion gave the Bobcats a 42-24 lead with 2:53 left in the third quarter. Big plays in the drive were a 26-yard run by Weaver and a 28-yard pass from Weaver to
Jeriko Morris (Crystal Springs).
Two possessions later, the Bobcats marched from its own 36 to the PRCC 3 in 10 plays. Kroeze's 20-yard field goal gave JCJC a 45-24 lead with 8:34 remaining in the game.
The Wildcats would come right back and go 65 yards in four plays with the help of a pair of 15-yard penalties against the Bobcats. Quinn would eventually score on a 1-yard run. Johnson's extra point made it 45-31 with 7:33 left.
Two possessions later, JCJC would take over on downs at the Wildcat 12. On a fourth and 12 play at the PRCC 14, Weaver hit Morris on the fade route for a touchdown. Kroeze's kick ended the scoring with 2:32 remaining.
Pearl River, 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the division, will host Mississippi Gulf Coast on Oct. 21.
