ELLISVILLE – The 15
th-rated Jones County Junior College Bobcats took the court for the first time in 27 days here Monday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
It took a bit to get rolling, but the Bobcats put it all together in the second half and defeated Southern University-Shreveport (Louisiana), 89-70.
It was JCJC's first contest since defeating Coahoma 90-73 on Dec. 12.
JCJC remains unbeaten at 10-0, while SUS falls to 7-6.
Jones jumped to a 17-6 lead when
Enrique Milton (Jackson Provine) converted a 3-point play at 12:22 of the first half.
But the Jaguars fought back to within 27-26 with 7:30 showing when Darrell Thomas scored.
The Bobcats went ahead 36-29 when Milton scored on a layup with 3:28 left, but SUS cut the margin to 40-37 at halftime.
JCJC started the second half on a 14-3 run, capped by a
Bruce Stevens (Bay Springs) 3-pointer at 16:28 to take a 54-40 lead. But SUS came back to within 59-56 with 12:37 left on a Herbert Atkin basket.
Maurice Dunlap (Amanda Elzy) hit a 15-footer to give the Bobcats a 73-62 lead. Darrion Jacobs answered for the Jaguars with a slam dunk to make it 73-64 with 7:42 remaining, but that was as close as the visitors would get.
Dunlap's basket at 1:14 gave JCJC its longest lead at 89-67. The Bobcats ended the game on a 16-6 run.
David Davis (Purvis) led four Bobcats in double figures with 17 points.
Tristin Walley (Hattiesburg) added 16, while Dunlap and Stevens each had 15 points.
Tae Washington had 20 for the Jaguars, while Darrell Thomas added 17 and T.P. Gibson finished with 15.
Stevens had 12 rebounds, while Walley added 10.
The Bobcats were 31-of-64 (6-of-21 from 3-point range) from the field and 21-of-30 from the free throw line.
SUS was 25-of-57 (6-of-20 from 3-point range) from the floor and 14-of-21 from the free throw line.
JCJC outrebounded the Jags, 43-34.
The Bobcats resume MACJC South Division play on Thursday at Hinds. The women's game begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
The Jaguars travel to Arkansas Baptist on Saturday.
