Third quarter surge boosts Lady Bobcats past Hinds

UTICA – Jones County broke a 31-31 tie with 11 straight points to start the third quarter and went on to defeat Hinds Community College, 81-68, here Thursday night at J.D. Boyd Gymnasium.
JCJC is now 10-1 overall and 1-1 in the MACJC South Division.
Tatyana Lofton (Madison-Ridgeland Academy) hit a driving shot to start the third quarter and gave JCJC the lead for good at 33-31. Nique Cherry (Heidelberg) followed with a basket. Myyah West (Prentiss) then made a free throw and hit a field goal to put JCJC up 38-31.
Cherry followed with another basket and Alexis Tolefree (Conway, Arkansas) capped the 11-0 run with a pair of free throws to give the Lady Bobcats a 42-31 lead with 7:05 showing.
The Lady Bobcats extended the lead to 56-42wiht 2:13 left when West scored. Zan Ratcliffe's (West Jones) two free throws with two seconds left gave the Lady Bobcats a 62-49 lead after three quarters. Jones matched its first half total with 31 points in the third quarter.
The closest Hinds got in the fourth quarter was 69-57 with 5:50 remaining when Areleatha Gipson made two free throws.
JCJC's longest lead of the game was at 77-60 with 2:20 left when Cherry scored.
In the first half, JCJC's longest lead was 15-8 when Tolefree made a 25-footer with 2:47 showing in the first quarter. But Hinds closed the lead to 15-14 after the first quarter.
The Lady Bulldogs took its first lead at 20-18 with 7:39 left in the first half when Ernesha Chapman made a 3-pointer. But Lofton quickly answered with a 3-pointer to put Jones up 21-20 with 6:53 left.
Hinds' final lead of the night came at 29-27 with 1:41 remaining when Chapman scored.
West had 21 points and 8 rebounds, while Lofton finished with 19 points. Cherry had a 'double-double' with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Ratcliffe had 8 points and 5 rebounds.
Octavia Barnes led Hinds, 8-2 overall and 1-1 in the division, with 15 points. Zvaire Ewing and Twila Hill added 12 each and Gibson had 11.
The Bobcats travel to Pearl River on Tuesday. The game tips at 5:30 p.m.
