Late touchdown lifts Wolves past No. 6 Bobcats, 27-22

WESSON – The Copiah-Lincoln Wolfpack overcame a nine-point deficit with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns and edged No. 6 Jones County 27-22 here Thursday night at Stone Stadium.
The loss drops JCJC to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the MACJC South Division. Co-Lin is now 2-2 and 1-1 in division play.
JCJC took a 22-13 lead when safety Jonathan Abram (East Marion) entered the game as a quarterback out of the "Bobcat" formation and connected with tight end Chancie Tidwell (Clinton) on a 33-yard jump pass on a fourth and 3 play. Brady Farlow's (Purvis) extra point put the Bobcats up by nine with 11:08 remaining in the game.
The Abram to Tidwell pass ended an 86-yard, 10-play drive.
The Wolves answered quickly.
Quarterback Dominic DeLira tossed a short pass to Nero Nelson who took it the distance for 64 yards and a touchdown. The play ended a swift, 76-yard, four-play drive. Griffin Sublett's extra point trimmed the lead to 22-20.
The Bobcats would then go '3 and out' on its next series.
Co-Lin took over on its own 23-yard line with 7:32 left in the game.
DeLira hit Nelson for a big 35-yard pass, which moved the ball all the way to the JCJC 3. But consecutive running plays were stuffed by the Bobcat defensive line and lost six yards, forcing a third and goal at the 9.
After a Bobcat timeout, DeLira rolled to his right and threw back across the field to his left to open tight end Erick Grossley, who took it in for the touchdown. Sublett's PAT gave the Wolfpack a 27-22 lead with 2:22 remaining.
JCJC began its final possession at its own 25. The Bobcats moved quickly to a first down at the Co-Lin 41.
Quarterback Detric Hawthorn (Collins) spiked the ball on first down to stop the clock. The next pass was deep and fell incomplete.
On third down with 26 seconds to play, the snap was high and went through Hawthorn's hands. He fell on it back at his own 46 for a 13-yard loss and the Bobcats had to use their final timeout with just 18 seconds remaining.
On fourth and 23, Hawthorn was pressured and stripped of the ball. Co-Lin's Barry Howard recovered to clinch the game.
The Bobcats began the game in fine fashion.
JCJC took the opening kickoff and quickly moved 76 yards in four plays. Scott Phillips (South Jones) took a handoff from Hawthorn and raced 54 yards for a touchdown. Farlow's extra point made it 7-0 with 13:10 showing in the first quarter.
It stayed that way until early in the second quarter when Co-Lin took advantage of a fumbled JCJC punt at the Bobcat 13.
The Wolves were unable to move the ball after getting the turnover, but Sublett booted a 30-yard field goal to make it 7-3 with 13:15 left in the first half.
Later in the quarter, JCJC faced a fourth and 1 at the Co-Lin 44. Taylor Wallace (Jackson Prep) punted the ball 43 yards to the Wolfpack 1.
On the very next play, Bobcat defensive tackle Jordan Beaton (Harrison Central) stood up Co-Lin running back Ladarius Galloway in the end zone for a safety, giving the Bobcats a 9-3 lead with 4:55 left in the first half.
The Bobcats took the ensuing free kick at its own 44. Co-Lin forced a punt and Wallace booted it 48 yards to Nelson at his own 12. He returned it to the 27, but the Bobcats were called for a facemask penalty, giving the Wolfpack the ball at their own 42.
Three plays later, DeLira found Datrin Guyton for a 43-yard scoring strike. Sublett's conversion gave Co-Lin a 10-9 lead with just 1:32 left in the first half.
Nelson then made another big play for the Wolfpack when he returned the second half kickoff 68 yards to the JCJC 32. Six plays later, Sublett kicked a 34-yard field goal to give Co-Lin a 13-9 lead with 12:27 left in the third quarter.
JCJC would then regain the lead on their next possession. The Bobcats marched 65 yards in seven plays with Phillips ending the drive with a 1-yard plunge. The big play in the drive was a 44-yard pass from Hawthorn to Nate Cohen (East Central). However, the extra point attempt failed and JCJC led 15-13 with 8:57 left in the third quarter.
Late in the third quarter, the Bobcats would fumble and Co-Lin's Montez Sweat recovered at the JCJC 34.
Co-Lin would then have a third and 1 at the Bobcat 25, but linebacker Cannon Gibbs sailed through and sacked DeLira for a 15-yard loss to knock the Wolfpack out of field goal range.
The Bobcats would then drive and go up by two scores early in the fourth quarter, but they would be unable to hold the lead.
Defensviely, Gibbs had nine tackles three fackles for loss and a sack to pace the Bobcats. Abram had six tackles and one TFL, while Tramond Lofton (Wayne County) also had six tackles. Javon Kinlaw (Charleston, South Carolina) had four tackles, while Beaton had two fackles and one TFL. Travis Reed (Meridian) had one tackle and two pass breakups and Derric Hawthorn (Collins) had one tackle and one pass breakup.
Phillips ended the game with 130 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Rashaud Green (Bassfield) ended the game with 45 yards and Hawthorn had 44.
JCJC had 15 first downs, 232 yards rushing and 101 yards passing for 333 yards of total offense.
Co-Lin also had 15 first downs, 65 rushing yards, 255 yards passing and 320 yards of offense.
The Bobcats return home for another division next week vs. Southwest. JCJC hosts the Bears at 7 p.m. on Sept. 29 and the game will air on www.jcjc.tv.
The Wolves host East Central on Sept. 29.
