ELLISVILLE – Copiah-Lincoln never trailed and handed Jones County its first loss of the season, 79-68, here Monday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
The Lady Bobcats are now 5-1 overall and 0-1 in MACJC South Division play. Co-Lin is 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the division.
Co-Lin jumped out to a 13-2 lead at the 5:01 mark of the first quarter when Danisha Davis scored. JCJC's first field goal did not come until
Nique Cherry (Heidelberg) scored with 4:19 left in the first quarter. But JCJC rallied and cut the lead to 17-13 when
K.K. Tassin (Terry) hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
The Lady Bobcats would tie the game at 19-19 with 7:41 left in the first half when
Tatyana Lofton (Madison-Ridgeland Academy) made a 12-footer.
But Co-Lin went on a 13-4 run and took a 32-23 lead when Kiera Robinson scored at 4:45. The Lady Wolves led 37-28 at halftime.
After a
Kira Bonner (Quitman) basket trimmed the lead to 57-45 with 2:24 left in the third quarter, Co-Lin scored eight straight points and would take a 65-45 lead going into the final period.
The Lady Bobcats would make it interesting in the final 10 minutes.
Myyah West's (Prentiss) basket at 4:33 cut the lead to 67-59.
Nique Cherry's (Heidelberg) 3-point play with 1:13 remaining would pull Jones within 73-68.
But the Lady Bobcats would not score again and Co-Lin made 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch to clinch the game.
Lofton paced JCJC with 22 points, while Cherry added 14 and West had 12. Cherry had 9 rebounds, while
Zan Ratcliffe (West Jones) had 5 assists.
Tenazhia Hinkson had 15 for Co-Lin, 6-1 and 1-0 in the division, while Brittany Ross added 13 and Davis had 12.
JCJC was 24-of-66 from the floor (7-of-27 from 3-point range) for 36 percent. The Lady Bobcats were 13-of-24 from the free throw line for 54 percent.
Co-Lin was 26-of-64 from the field (8-of-12 from 3-point range) for 41 percent. The Lady Wolves were 19-of-28 from the free throw line for 68 percent.
Co-Lin outrebounded JCJC, 51-42. The Lady Bobcats had 21 turnovers, while Co-Lin had 15.
JCJC travels to Baton Rouge Community College (Louisiana) for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday.
The Lady Wolves host Delgado Community College (Louisiana) on Saturday.
