ELLISVILLE – Jones County Junior College opened the 2016-17 women's basketball season in impressive fashion.
The Lady Bobcats placed four players in double figures and never trailed in crushing Alabama Southern 88-48 here Tuesday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
K.K. Tassin (Terry) and
Myyah West (Prentiss) had 15 points each, while
Zan Ratcliffe (West Jones) added 13 and
Tatyana Lofton (Madison-Ridgeland Academy) added 11.
JCJC scored the game's first seven points and never looked back.
Lofton's two free throws gave Jones a 7-0 lead at 7:27, but Alabama Southern got within 13-9 at 3:13 of the first quarter on a Caitlyn Jakes basket. JCJC was up 18-11 after the first quarter.
The Lady Bobcats took their longest lead of the first half with 1:12 left in the second quarter when Ratcliffe converted a 3-point play.
JCJC's longest lead of the third quarter came at 1:5 when
Kyle Felton (Lithonia, Georgia) scored.
Jones outscored ASCC 10-0 to start the final quarter. The Lady Bobcats took their longest lead of the evening at 86-39 with 4:43 remaining when
Madison Bishop (Collegiate Christian) made two free throws.
Nique Cherry (Heidelberg) added 9 points for JCJC, while Felton and
Kira Bonner (Quitman) had 7 points each.
Juliet Esadah ((Warri, Nigeria) scored 4 points, while Bishop,
Patrice Tate (Velma Jackson) and
Hayle Lott (Petal) added 2 points each and
Hanah Lott (Petal) had 1.
The Lady Bobcats were 29-of-42 from the free throw line.
Jakes led Alabama Southern, 0-1, with 11 points.
ASCC was 11-of-19 from the free throw line.
JCJC travels to Holmes for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff on Monday.
Alabama Southern hosts Pensacola St. (Florida) on Nov. 8.
