ELLISVILLE – The 11
th- rated Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats clinched the MACJC South Division regular season title with a 7-1 victory over Meridian here Tuesday evening at Bobcat Soccer Field.
The Lady Bobcats are now 11-1 overall and 8-0 in division play.
JCJC will draw a first-round bye in postseason play and will advance to the MACJC Tournament semfinals. The MACJC Tournament will be held Oct. 29-30 at the site of the MACJC South Division men's champion, which is Mississippi Gulf Coast.
But JCJC still has two regular season games remaining. The Lady Bobcats visit Copiah-Lincoln at 4 p.m. on Friday and will host Pearl River for "Sophomore Night" at 5 p.m. on Oct. 18.
Meridian goes to Pearl River on Friday.
Mary Kate Smith (South Jones) scored two goals and had two assists for the Lady Bobcats.
Kelly Stubbington (London, England) had two goals and one assist and
Ashleigh Lewis also had two goals for JCJC.
Smith got JCJC on the board with a header at 1:21. She followed that up with another goal off a Stubbington assist at 17:50.
Lewis scored off a Smith assist at 20:16 and
Mattie Mills (South Pontotoc) scored at 38:40 to give JCJC a 4-0 lead at halftime.
Stubbington scored on a penalty kick at 54:21 and added another goal at 67:26.
MCC avoided the shutout at 69:53 when Alandria Smith scored.
The Lady Bobcats' final goal came at 89:33 when Lewis scored off a Smith assist.
Mia Holmes (Brandon) played the first half in goal for Jones and
Caroline Runion (Madison Central) played the second half.
JCJC took 29 shots and 11 shots on goal, while Meridian had five shots and three shots on goal. Each team had two corner kicks.
The Lady Eagles fall to 6-7 overall and 4-4 in the division.
