ELLISVILLE – Southwest Mississippi outscored Jones County 13-2 over the final 1:59 of overtime to post an 84-78 decision over the Lady Bobcats here Thursday night at Bobcat Gymnasium.
The loss snapped a 10-game winning streak for the Lady Bobcats. JCJC is now 12-3 overall and 5-1 in the MACJC South Division.
Southwest improves to 13-2 and 5-1. JCJC, Southwest and East Central are tied for first place in the division.
The Lady Bobcats led 59-52 entering the final quarter.
SMCC fought back within 61-59, but JCJC ran the lead back to 67-60 with 3:18 remaining on a
Tatyana Lofton basket. But the Lady Bears came back and pulled within 69-68 with 1:24 left when Alissa Adam scored.
At that point, the game was delayed almost 40 minutes by a tornado warning. The teams were sent to their respective dressing rooms and fans were sent to the lobby and the rear of the gym.
When play resumed the Lady Bears took a 70-69 lead with 55 seconds left on a Lillie Snowden basket. Lofton then tied the game at 70-70 with 41.1 seconds to play on a free throw.
After a missed shot by Southwest, the Lady Bobcats got the rebound and called timeout with 12.4 seconds to play. Lofton then missed a shot at the buzzer, which forced overtime.
JCJC got off to a good start in the extra session with Lofton hitting a pair of shots. After a Snowden free throw, Lofton made two free throws to put the Lady Bobcats ahead 76-71 with 1:59 to play.
But Adam hit a 3-pointer and made a layup to tie the game at 76-76 with 1:03 left. Teshia Jones then made a layup with 47.1 seconds to play and added two free throws with 31.1 seconds remaining to give Southwest an 80-76 lead.
Hanah Lott scored for JCJC with 23.8 seconds to play and was fouled. She missed the free throw, but
Wendion Bibbins grabbed the rebound.
After a timeout with 18 seconds remaining, the Lady Bobcats got the ball to Lofton, who missed a difficult shot inside.
Snowden got the rebound, was fouled and hit both free throws with 13.9 seconds to give the Lady Bears an 82-78 lead. After a JCJC missed shot, Southwest's Gabriella Cortez hit two free throws with 2.8 seconds left to end the scoring.
The Lady Bears led 16-10 late in the first quarter, but JCJC scored 12 straight points and took a 22-16 lead after the opening period.
The Lady Bobcats would take its longest lead of the game at 38-25 with 3:31 left in the first half when
Zan Ratcliffe scored off an assist by Lott. The Lady Bears cut the lead to 41-34 at halftime.
Southwest would then take a 52-49 with 2:30 left in the third quarter when Ke'Asia Gray scored.
But JCJC scored the final 10 points of the quarter, capped by a
Myyah West putback, to take the 7-point lead going into the final quarter.
JCJC had three players with 'double-doubles.' West had 19 points and 13 rebounds, Lofton had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Bibbins finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Lott had 11 points. Lott and Bibbins had four assists each.
Adam paced Southwest with 25 points, while Jones had 21 and Cortez finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
JCJC was 27-of-78 from the field (4-of-20 from 3-point range) for 35 percent. The Lady Bobcats were 20-of-25 from the free throw line.
Southwest was 27-of-67 from the floor (8-of-26 from 3-point range) for 40 percent. The Lady Bears were 22-of-27 from the free throw line.
JCJC outrebounded Southwest, 52-42.
The Lady Bobcats will travel to Utica to face Hinds at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
Southwest hosts East Central on Monday.
