MERIDIAN – Five players scored in double figures to lead the Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats to a 99-87 victory over Meridian Community College here Thursday night at Graham Gymnasium at Redgate Court.
Jayda Simmons scored a season-high 23 points to pace the Lady Bobcats, now 14-6 overall and in sole possession of third place in the MACJC South Division at 8-4.
Terrica Williams added 17 points, while
Alyson Johnson had 14.
Taylor Baudoin had 12 and
Hayley Pichon had 11 as the Lady Bobcats enjoyed a hot-shooting night from the floor.
Johnson had seven rebounds and
Starla Daggans had 10 assists.
JCJC took the lead for good just over two minutes into the game and a Daggans' basket with 13:57 left gave them a 25-9 advantage.
The Lady Bobcats kept up the pressure and went ahead 41-19 with 8:00 left when Pichon scored. Pichon's basket with eight seconds remaining gave JCJC a 61-39 halftime lead.
Baudoin's basket with 16:31 left in the game gave JCJC its longest lead at 71-43. Johnson's bucket with 9:29 remaining gave the Lady Bobcats an 87-62 lead. MCC then went on a 14-0 run and got within 87-76 with 4:06 to play.
A Tytianna Hall basket with 1:22 left got MCC to within 93-83, but that was as close as they would get.
Hall had 23 points for MCC, 14-8 overall and 7-5 in division play. Nelundra Moore added 19, Andrianna James had 14 and Miaya Crowder had 13 points and nine rebounds.
JCJC was 40-of-73 from the floor, including 2-of-8 from 3-point range, for 55 percent. They were 17-of-23 from the free throw line.
MCC was 28-of-68 from the field, including 2-of-5 from 3-point range, for 41 percent. The Lady Eagles were 29-of-40 from the foul line.
JCJC outrebounded MCC, 45-33. The Lady Bobcats committed 22 turnovers, compared to 16 for Meridian.
The Bobcats will hold "Sophomore Night" on Monday at A.B. Howard Gymnasium when they host Southwest Mississippi. The women's game tips off at 5:30 p.m.
Meridian travels to Co-Lin on Monday.
