Andre Johnson scored 22 points – including six 3-pointers – to spark Jones County Junior College to a 107-78 victory over Delgado Community College (Louisiana) here Monday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
Johnson is a 6-foot-4 freshman guard from Sarasota, Florida, and is a transfer from Collin Community College (Texas).
The Bobcats improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Dolphins drop to 2-6.
The issue was never in doubt.
JCJC took the lead for good at 5-4 with 17:01 left in the first half when
Xavier Howard scored.
Leading 16-12, the Bobcats went on an 8-0 run and took a 24-12 lead with 10:44 left on a layup by
David Davis. The Dolphins pulled within 28-22 with 7:32 left when Jeffrey Dixon converted a 3-point play.
Delgado was within 34-25 with just less then six minutes to play in the half, but the Bobcats outscored them 26-9 the rest of the half and led 60-34 at intermission. JCJC's biggest lead of the half was 58-31 with 1:21 left when
Maurice Dunlap made two free throws.
JCJC continued to cruise in the second half, taking a 72-42 lead with 15:11 remaining when Davis scored. Johnson's final 3-pointer gave the Bobcats a 91-64 lead with 7:06 left.
The Bobcats' longest lead came with just 44 seconds to play when
James Williams made two free throws to give JCJC a 107-75 cushion.
Johnson's 22 points led the Bobcats, while Davis added 16,
Bruce Stevens had 14 and
Rickey Holden added 12.
Markel Williams and Marcel Daniels had 15 points each for Delgado, while Ray White and Miles-Jordan Smart both scored 12.
The Bobcats will host Royal Ambassadors Prep at 4 p.m. on Nov. 23. JCJC begins MACJC South Division play on Dec. 3 at Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Delgado hosts Copiah-Lincoln at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
