Bobcats fall to No. 7 East Mississippi, 49-7

ELLISVILLE – Seventh-ranked East Mississippi put up 21 points in each of the first two quarters and went to defeat Jones County Junior College 49-7 here Thursday night at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field.
The Bobcats are now 2-4 overall and will host East Central at 2 p.m. on Oct. 10 for Homecoming. The game will air only on www.jcjc.tv. East Mississippi, 5-1, travels to Holmes on Oct. 8.
The Bobcats finished the game with 12 first downs and 185 yards. EMCC had 22 first downs and 519 yards.
Thad Miller was 19-of-33 for 122 yards for the Bobcats. EMCC's Wyatt Roberts was 21-of-31 through the air for 284 yards and three touchdowns.
EMCC's Corey Davis had five catches for 54 yards and two touchdowns. Isaiah Wright rushed 13 times for 76 yards and three touchdowns.
Defensively, once again linebacker Ty Hill led JCJC in tackles with 10. Linebacker Cannon Gibbs and defensive back Ramon Patton had nine each, while safety Al'Dreecous Wilson and cornerback Javien Hamilton each had six stops. End Javarious Tanner had a sack and cornerback Jaylon Lane had five tackles, including one TFL.
The Lions took the opening kickoff and drove 70 yards in six plays for a touchdown. Roberts connected with Dario Robinson from 11 yards out and Grayson Pontius kicked the extra point to make it 7-0 with 13:09 left in the first quarter.
Robinson would then move to defense and intercept a Miller pass and put the Lions in business at the JCJC 34-yard line.
Five plays later, Wright scored on a 9-yard run. Pontius kicked the extra point to make it 14-0 with 7:35 left in the first quarter.
On EMCC's next possession, they drove 59 yards in six plays with Wright scoring from three yards out. Pontius booted the extra point and it was 21-0 with 5:13 left in the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, the Bobcats drove from their 41 to the Lion 4-yard line where they faced a third and 2. Tevin Moore took a direct snap from center, but was dropped for a three-yard loss. After a delay of game penalty, Michael Godley's 29-yard field goal attempt was wide right.
The Lions took over at their own 20 and drove 80 yards in 10 plays. Wright scored on a 6-yard run and Pontius added the conversion to make it 28-0 with 7:05 left in the first half.
EMCC would then go 74 yards in nine plays. Backup quarterback John Franklin scored from a yard out and Pontius added the extra point to make it 35-0 with 3:04 left in the second quarter.
The Lions would hold the Bobcats and take over at their own 7-yard line with just 2:03 left in the half. EMCC would then move 93 yards in 12 plays with Roberts finding Davis for a 17-yard touchdown strike with 9.5 seconds left in the half. Pontius made the extra point to make it 42-0 at halftime.
The second half would be played with a running clock because there was a difference of more than 38 points.
The Lions got their last touchdown with a 40-yard, five-play drive. Davis caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Roberts with 25 seconds left in the third quarter. Pontius converted the PAT and the Lions led 49-0.
JCJC then took the ensuing kickoff and went 76 yards in 11 plays. Backup quarterback Kelvin Bourrage hit Nate Cohen with a 21-yard touchdown pass with 6:41 left in the game. Godley was successful on the extra point attempt.
East Mississippi played the game without the services of head coach Buddy Stephens, who was serving the first game of a two-game suspension after an altercation with an official in last week's game vs. Itawamba.
