ELLISVILLE – The Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats jumped out to a 15-2 lead and went on crush Mississippi Gulf Coast 84-53 here Thursday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
It was the MACJC South Division opener for both teams.
Starla Daggans had a solid game as the Lady Bobcats improved to 7-1 overall, 1-0 in the division.
Daggans had 21 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals to pace Jones.
Kadie Parker added 14 points and
Taylor Baudoin added 10 points and a game-high 8 rebounds.
JCJC jumped out to a 15-2 lead in the first seven minutes of play, but MGCCC cut the lead to 26-17 with just under seven minutes left in the first half. The Lady Bobcats stretched the lead back to 43-25 at halftime.
The Lady Bobcats did not let up in the second half. They took a 64-33 lead with 10:36 left when Daggans scored. JCJC's longest lead came at 78-45 with 3:07 left on a free throw by
Hayley Pichon.
Raven Tillman led MGCCC, 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the division, with 15 points and Cilinda Brown added 11.
JCJC was 33-of-71 from the field, including 4-of-11 from 3-point range, for 46.5 percent. They were 14-of-24 from the free throw line.
MGCCC was just 18-of-57 from the field, including 3-of-12 from 3-point range, from 31.6 percent. They were also 14-of-24 from the foul line.
The Lady Bobcats outrebounded MGCCC, 40-33. JCJC had 15 turnovers and the Lady Bulldogs had 21.
The Bobcats will conclude play for the 2014 portion of the season when they travel to Decatur on Monday to battle East Central Community College. The Lady Warriors are 7-0 after beating Meridian 91-65 on Thursday.
MGCCC entertains Meridian on Monday.
