SENATOBIA – Fifth-ranked Jones College remained unbeaten and continued its recent dominance of Northwest on Tuesday night at the Ranger Soccer Complex.
Stanley Georgiou converted a penalty in the 16th minute, Mario Novaku added an insurance goal from 30 yards late and the Bobcats shut out the Rangers, 2-0.
Jones improved to 9-0-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play while extending its winning streak in the series against Northwest to seven matches. The Rangers dropped to 4-4-2 overall and 2-1 in league play.
The Bobcats controlled much of the match, finishing with a 10-4 advantage in shots and putting all 10 of their attempts on goal. Jones also generated a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Georgiou provided the only goal Jones needed 16 minutes into the match.
After the Bobcats earned a penalty, Georgiou stepped to the spot and converted to put Jones ahead 1-0. The goal was part of an active night for Georgiou, who finished with three shots, all of them on target.
Jones' defense made the early lead stand.
Northwest did not record a shot in the opening 45 minutes, while the Bobcats produced four shots and seven corner kicks before halftime. Ranger goalkeeper TJay Gibb made two first-half saves to keep the deficit at one.
Jones continued to pressure Northwest at the other end, producing six second-half shots and forcing Gibb into five more saves before putting the match away in the 87th minute.
Gibb totaled seven saves for Northwest, while Correro finished with two in his 90-minute shutout.
The Bobcats return home Friday to host Southwest for an 8 p.m. kick.
