ELLISVILLE –
Madison Sawyer tossed a five-inning no-hitter in the opener and
Laney Little hit a walk-off home run in game two in the sixth as No. 6 Jones blanked Holmes twice on Saturday at Community Bank Park/Gwen Magee Field.
Jones improved to 30-7 overall, 9-3 MACCC and dropped Holmes to 20-18, 5-9.
The Bobcats host No. 24 Missisippi Gulf Coast on Tuesday in a series Jones has dominated the last decade, winning 25 of the last 29.
Jones 14, Holmes 0 (5 inn.)
The tone was set immediately in the top of the first, as Jones erupted for seven runs, more than enough offense for Sawyer.
Mary Kimble Price delivered the biggest blow of the inning with a three-run homer to left-center, scoring
Annaston Tate and
Claire Andersen. The offense kept piling on, highlighted by RBIs from
Chloe Jenkins,
Reagan Dale and Tate along with aggressive baserunning and a costly Holmes wild pitch that extended the inning. By the time the dust settled, Jones had built a commanding 7-0 lead.
Jones continued to apply pressure in the third inning, capitalizing on more Holmes miscues.
A wild pitch brought home another run before Price struck again, this time with a two-run single to push the lead to 10-0.
The fourth inning provided the finishing touches.
Laney Little drove in a run with a single, Tate added a sacrifice fly and
Mikayla Baumgartner capped the scoring with a two-RBI single to make it 14-0.
Sawyer struck out nine and allowed just two baserunners via a walk and hit-by-pitch.
Jones 8, Holmes 0 (6 inn.)
Just like in game one, Jones wasted no time taking control in the nightcap.
Price got the scoring started in the first inning with a two-run homer to left field, plating
Mabry Eason for an early 2-0 lead.
The offense broke things open in the third inning.
Addy Shorter sparked the rally with an RBI-single, followed by another run-scoring hit from
Reagan Dale. Little then drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead to 5-0.
Eason launched her team-leading 14th home run in the fourth inning, Sawyer added an RBI-single in the fifth and Little capped the scoring with a solo shot to left-center in the sixth to end it early.
Jones totaled 11 hits and worked six walks. Price reached base four times and finished with two RBIs, while Eason had a big day with three runs scored and a home run. Shorter added two hits and an RBI and Little drove in two runs, including her walk-off homer.
In the circle,
Breelyn Cain delivered a strong performance to secure the shutout. She went six innings, allowing just three hits while striking out five and walking none.
