Georgiou's early goal lifts No. 9 Jones past Itawamba, 1-0

ELLISVILLE – Stanley Georgiou scored in the 14th minute and ninth-ranked Jones College dominated possession and scoring opportunities Friday night, holding off Itawamba 1-0 for its 10th clean sheet of the season.

The Bobcats (14-1-2, 8-1-1 MACCC) have posted back-to-back shutouts since suffering their first loss of the season to No. 7 Pearl River on Oct. 13.

Itawamba dropped to 6-4-5 overall and 3-4-3 in conference play.

Despite a commanding 20-2 advantage in shots and a 12-1 edge in shots on goal, Jones needed just one early strike to secure its 14th victory of the season.

Georgiou provided the difference at the 13:30 mark, finishing a feed from Essa Jadama to put the Bobcats ahead 1-0. It was the lone goal in a match Jones controlled from start to finish but couldn't put away despite numerous opportunities.

The Bobcats peppered Itawamba goalkeeper Hagan Pearce, forcing him into 11 saves to keep the Indians within striking distance.

Jones held a 10-1 advantage in first-half shots and earned five corner kicks before halftime, but carried just a one-goal lead into the break.

The offensive pressure continued over the final 45 minutes, with the Bobcats adding 10 more shots and six additional corners. Pearce turned away six second-half attempts to keep the margin at one.

Jones also held an 11-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Freshman goalkeeper Logan Correro needed just one save to preserve his eighth clean sheet.

Jones wraps up the regular season Tuesday, Oct. 27 at Hinds. Kickoff has been moved up to 4 o'clock.
