The Bobcats took care of business last week in the season opener at Moorhead, completely overwhelming Mississippi Delta, 33-0.
The Bobcats outgained the Trojans in total offense, 456-42, and had 17 first downs compared to MDCC's four. Jones had 200 yards rushing and 256 yards passing. MDCC had five yards rushing and 37 yards passing.
Individually, quarterback
Cannon Crowder (Presbyterian Christian School) completed 7-of-11 passes for 212 yards and one touchdown – a 93-yard strike to
Kaiden Smith (Oak Grove). That was the longest Bobcat touchdown pass since Anthony Jackson caught a 99-yard scoring strike from Early James on Sept. 25, 2008, in a 31-24 win at Hinds. Crowder also rushed for 42 yards to account for 256 yards.
Jevarion Glover (Amanda Elzy) was 3-of-6 through the air for 44 yards and rushed for 35 yards.
Running back
Ky'Yon Harris (Union) carried nine times for 53 yards and three touchdowns – all in the first half.
TK Keyes (Taylorsville) had four receptions for 93 yards and Southern Miss transfer
JQ Gray (Oak Grove) had three catches for 34 yards.
There were numerous standouts on defense led by freshman linebacker
Dalyn Pierce (Bay Springs) who had six tackles. Freshman linebacker
Delarrius Hayes (Magee) had four tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Freshman cornerback
KeVon Ford (Moss Point) had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Freshman nickelback
Jamar Pittman (Oak Grove) and freshman linebacker
Ny'zavion McClendon (Lake) also had forced fumbles.
Coahoma (0-1) had a rough go in its opener, dropping a 42-3 decision to No. 7 Copiah-Lincoln.
The Tigers had seven first downs, 25 yards rushing, 148 yards passing and 173 yards of total offense. They allowed 32 first downs and 487 yards of total offense.
Co-Lin led 36-0 at halftime and Coahoma's only points came on a 20-yard field goal by Andrew Harrison midway through the fourth quarter.
Next week, Jones will play its first home game and the MACCC South Division opener when they entertain No. 9 Mississippi Gulf Coast. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11 at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field.
It will be "Hall of Fame Night" on campus as the Jones College Athletics Hall of Fame will announce seven inductees. Those inductees are Jerred Clark (men's soccer), Paul Culliver (football, track), Tonya Jones (softball), Sharon Pendarvis Murray (women's basketball), Anna Kathryn Howard Ozmint (women's soccer), Andrew Pierce (baseball) and Bruce Strickland (football).
Coahoma hosts Holmes on Sept. 11.
