CLARKSDALE – Jones College led 37-0 at halftime and coasted to a 51-20 decision over Coahoma here Thursday night at James E. Miller Stadium.
The victory sets up an early season showdown next week when the Bobcats (2-0) host No. 9 Mississippi Gulf Coast (2-0) on Sept. 11 at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field. MGCCC crushed Mississippi Delta 58-7 Thursday night.
Jones piled up 444 yards of total offense, a week after going for 456 yards in a 33-0 win over MDCC.
It was the most points Jones has scored since a 55-6 win over Southwest on Oct. 9, 2021.
The Bobcats scored on their first seven possessions, taking a knee on the final play of the first half.
Jones took the opening kickoff and went 54 yards in nine plays with
Christian Baglione (Northwest Rankin) booting a 32-yard field goal to make it 3-0 with 11:03 showing in the first quarter.
Baglione followed with a 28-yard field goal on the next possession, ending a 58-yard, seven-play drive. That kick made it 6-0 with 5:28 to play in the opening quarter.
Jones took advantage of a short punt and then drove 21 yards in four plays. Quarterback
Jevarion Glover (Amanda Elzy) scored on a 13-yard run and Baglione's kick made it 13-0 with 48 seconds to play in first quarter.
The Bobcats then had a 59-yard, two-play drive. Starting at their own 41-yard line, Jones got a 52-yard run by Craft, followed by a 7-yard touchdown run by Craft. Baglione's PAT made it 20-0 with 13:55 left in the second quarter.
Jones then went 53 yards in seven plays with Baglione's 31-yard field goal ending the drive. That made it 23-0 with 6:17 to play in the first half.
Tyree Barnett's (Hattiesburg) 22-yard punt return would give the Bobcats possession at the Coahoma 41. Three plays later, Crowder connected with Keyes for a 39-yard touchdown pass. Baglione's kick made it 30-0 with 3:02 showing on the clock.
Coahoma fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Battee recovered at the Tiger 1-yard line. Harris took it into the end zone on the next play and Baglione's extra point put Jones ahead 37-0 with 2:45 left in the first half.
In the third quarter, McClendon's pass interception gave the Bobcats the ball at the Coahoma 27. Three plays later, Harris scored on a 5-yard run and Baglione's PAT made it 44-0 with 13:13 showing on the clock.
Coahoma then got on the board, driving 75 yards in 13 plays. Jabari Watson scored on a 1-yard run and Andrew Harrison's extra point made it 44-7 with 2:30 left in the third quarter.
The Tigers then got a pass interception by Kyle Coleman to set up its next score. Watson passed 17 yards to Luke Bolin for a touchdown, which ended a 59-yard, six-play drive. Harrison's kick made it 44-14 with 11:07 left.
The Bobcats then drove 85 yards in six plays with Crowder scoring on a 3-yard run. The big play of the drive was a 62-yard pass from Crowder to Keyes. Baglione's kick made it 51-14 with 7:35 remaining.
Watson's 19-yard run ended the scoring with 4:58 left. That ended a 75-yard, four-play drive and the extra point attempt failed.
Ky'Yon Harris (Union) rushed 12 times for 80 yards and two touchdowns.
Cobey Craft (Taylorsville) carried eight times for 76 yards and a score. Quarterback
Cannon Crowder (Presbyterian Christian School) was 7-of-10 through the air for 156 yards and a touchdown.
TK Keyes (Taylorsville) had four receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown,
Kaiden Smith (Oak Grove) had one catch for 48 yards and Harris had two receptions for 32 yards.
Defensively,
Delarrius Hayes (Magee) had nine tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble.
Tay James (Mendenhall),
Cortland Battee (Florence) and
Ny'zavion McClendon (Lake) each had six tackles and a TFL. Battee had a fumble recovery and McClendon had a pass interception.
Watson came off the bench to complete 9-of-10 passes for 192 yards and a touchdown. He rushed for an additional 26 yards. Jaki Holmes had five catches for 129 yards and Bolin had nine receptions for 75 yards.
Jaden Gordon had nine tackles to lead the Tigers.
Coahoma (0-2) hosts Holmes on Sept. 11.
