Both the Bobcats and Wolves dropped their MACCC South Division openers last week. Jones fell to No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast, 28-24. Co-Lin lost to Hinds, 31-29.
Jones head coach
Lytrel Pollard was disappointed in the outcome, but saw some bright spots for the Bobcats.
"One of the biggest things is that the guys played for the entire game," he said. "They gave me everything they had. But we need to improve on finishing the second quarter on defense. We gave up that play where we assumed the guy was down. And we have to play better in the third quarter. We scored three points and gave up 14 and that's unacceptable.
"We got that interception and you want to get something out of that. But we got no points off of that turnover."
Both teams are 2-1 overall, 0-1 in the division so this week's game is crucial to remain in contention for postseason play.
Co-Lin led Hinds 17-10 at halftime, but the Eagles came back and took the lead, 31-23. Co-Lin scored with 26 seconds to play, but the two-point conversion pass failed and the Eagles got the win.
The Wolves had 24 first downs and 427 yards of total offense compared to just 12 first downs and 245 yards of offense for Hinds. But Co-Lin turned the ball over five times – three interceptions and two lost fumbles – while the Eagles turned the ball over twice.
"They moved it well, but you turn it over that much and it's hard to win a game," Pollard said. "But they were still in at the end, which tells you what kind of team they have."
Pollard is also concerned about the experience the Wolves have.
"They also have an older team with a lot of sophomores and experience," he said. "We've just got to go over there and play good football – not for one quarter, not for two quarters, but for four quarters and we will see what happens."
Co-Lin has played two quarterbacks who have posted similar numbers. Jaylen Pettway, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound redshirt freshman from Jacksonville, Fla., has completed 26-of-47 passes for 357 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Eli Vinyard, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound sophomore from Jefferson Davis County High School, has completed 20-of-34 passes for 229 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Martavious Boswell, a 5-foot-9, 175-pound sophomore from Fort Worth, Texas, tops the Co-Lin ground game with 35 carries for 318 yards and four scores. Jermarj Bell, a 5-foot-6, 150-pound freshman from Northside High School, has 10 receptions for 128 yards.
Defensively, Archie Chambers, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound redshirt sophomore from New Orleans, La., has 17 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss and Nehemiah McCloud, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound sophomore from Havana, Fla., has 12 tackles.
Jones had their chances last week vs. MGCCC.
After spotting the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead on a deflected, pick six Jones scored two touchdowns in a row on runs by
Ky'Yon Harris (Union) to take a 14-7 lead. A
Jevarion Glover (Amanda Elzy) 17-yard scoring run put the Bobcats up 21-14 at halftime.
MGCCC tied the game early in the third quarter, but
Christian Baglione's (Northwest Rankin) 31-yard field goal gave the Bobcats a 24-21 lead with 5:38 to play in the third quarter. But the Bulldogs got a 73-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of the third quarter and took the lead for good.
Glover, in his most extensive playing time of the year, produced 252 yards of total offense. He rushed for 129 yards on 17 carries and completed 14-of-22 passes for 123 yards.
TK Keyes (Taylorsville) had eight receptions for 74 yards.
Harris carried 20 times for 130 yards, giving the Bobcats two, 100-plus yard runners on the evening. He scored twice giving him seven touchdowns on the season, which leads the MACCC and the NJCAA.
Tay James (Mendenhall) led the Bobcats with 15 tackles last week and
Jeremiah Tatum (Columbia) had eight stops and 3.5 tackles for loss.
As a team, Jones is second in the MACCC, averaging 36.0 points per game and Co-Lin is third with 33.3 points per game. Co-Lin is third in total offense with 440.3 yards per game and the Bobcats are fourth with 430.7 yards per game.
The Wolves are third in scoring defense, allowing 15.7 points per game and Jones is fourth, giving up 16.0 points per game. Co-Lin tops the MACCC in total defense giving up 219.3 yards per game and the Bobcats are second, allowing 236.3 yards per game.
Pollard expects a hard-hitting game Thursday night at H.L. Stone Stadium.
"They are a good, well-coached football team," he said. "They kind of remind me of our team in that they play really fast and physical and they are sound in all areas of the game. I told our guys we have got to strap it up this week because they are going to hit you in the mouth from the beginning to the end."
The Bobcats will play its final non-division game next week when they host Holmes for Homecoming. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. on Sept. 27.
Co-Lin visits Southwest on Sept. 25.
