ELLISVILLE – Hours after moving up to No. 5 in the latest NJCAA rankings, Jones College fell 2-1 to winless Pensacola State on Monday.
The Pirates improved to 1-5 while the Bobcats dropped to 3-1-1.
Scoreless at the break, Emily Leonavicius' free kick from about 30 yards out took a big bounce in the box and fooled Bobcat keeper
Sara Kate Jefcoat and went over her head for the goal.
It took nearly 30 minutes for JC to find the equalizer when
Mary Grace Batson played a long ball near midfield and
Sherline King did a spin move around two defenders and scored to tie it at 1-1 in the 84th minute.
PSC then struck for the game-winner with 52 seconds left when a shot from Mia Johnson on the right side of the box curled into the top left shelf.
Jones outshot PSC 16-7, including 10-4 on goal.
Jennifer Huerzeler played the first 45 and didn't allow a goal. Jefcoat had two saves and two goals against to take the loss.
Jones opens MACCC play at home on Tuesday, Sept. 16 against Hinds. Kickoff set for 5:45 p.m.
