ELLISVILLE – Freshman hurler
Breelyn Cain tossed a complete-game, four-hit shutout and
Makynlie Jones and
Emily Mizelle had three RBIs each in a 7-0 blanking of Mississippi Gulf Coast to open region tournament play.
Jones improved to 44-8 and will meet Pearl River, 35-15, at 1 p.m. Monday in a winner's bracket contest. LSU Eunice and Gulf Coast will play in an elimination game at 4 p.m.
The complete-game shutout for Cain, now 15-4 in the circle, was her third of the year and she's won 12 of her last 13 starts.
Jones scored in each of the first five innings, with a Mak. Jones sac fly in the first and RBI-single in the second making it 2-0 Bobcats.
Addy Shorter's RBI-groundout extended the lead to 3-0 in the third.
Mizelle's two-run single in the fourth and her RBI-single in the fifth capped the scoring for Jones.
Claire Andersen added two hits.
The Bobcats left 12 on base in the 7-0 win.
Cain struck out five against one walk on 99 pitches, 67 of those strikes. Bulldog ace Karley Rouse was knocked out in the fourth after allowing five runs on six hits.
Monday's matchup between Pearl River should be a good one, with three of the last four meetings decided by one run.
