OXFORD, Ala. – For a second straight day,
Jayden Sawyer threw a gem in the circle. And the defense behind her showed out.
Claire Andersen and Jones manufactured a first-inning run on a walk, groundout and passed ball for the game's only run as the Bobcats snapped Murray State's nation-long 41-game winning streak to move into the NJCAA Division II World Series Semifinals.
Jones improved to 50-8, its first 50-win campaign since 2018, and handed Murray State, 61-2, its first loss since March 6.
Four teams remain entering Friday's semifinals.
Jones will face off with MACCC-rival Copiah-Lincoln at 2 p.m. on Signature Field, with the winner into Saturday's national championship game where they would have to be beat twice.
The other semifinal features Murray State and St. Johns River State at 4 o'clock Friday.
On Thursday, Andersen drew a leadoff walk, moved to second after a strikeout, to third on a groundout and then scored on a passed ball when
Emily Mizelle drew a walk.
Murray State's best chance to tie the game came in the fourth, but a second defensive play by Mizelle kept the Aggies off the board. A single to left was fielded by Andersen and quickly thrown in to third where Mizelle was able to tag out the runner halfway between third and home.
The Aggies managed only two baserunners the final three innings.
Marlee Dampeer added a fantastic diving play at short for the second out of the seventh inning and Jones was able to end it on a pop up.
Sawyer tossed a complete-game, six-hit shutout with six strikeouts and stranded six Aggies on base to move to 12-3 on the season and 2-0 at the tournament.
Murray State out-hit Jones 6-3.
Jones and Co-Lin will meet for a fourth time this season. The Bobcats have won three of four but the teams have split the last 22 overall.
