OXFORD, Ala. –
Emily Mizelle and
Kaleigh Steverson hit the first two home runs of the tournament, back-to-back in the first inning, to help lift No. 7 Jones over Black Hawk College, 10-2, in its NJCAA Division II World Series opener on Tuesday afternoon.
Jones improved to 48-8 and will get No. 21 Johnson County (Kan.) at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
The two teams played in Columbus, Ga., back on Feb. 21 with the Bobcats rallying for a 10-9 win thanks to a five-run top of the seventh.
Black Hawk plays in an elimination game at 4 p.m. today against Mott.
Jones jumped on top 3-0 after one but the Braves cut it to 3-2 with Megan Holub's two-out, two-run double to left in the third.
The Bobcats immediately got the run back in the bottom half after
Claire Andersen walked, stole second and then scored on a wild pitch.
A three-spot for Jones in the fourth, thanks to RBI-singles from
Laney Little, Andersen and
Makynlie Jones, extended the lead to 7-2.
Jones then put it away an inning later after a bases-loaded walk and
Jayden Sawyer sac fly scored Little to end it via run-rule.
Seven Bobcats combined for their eight hits.
Breelyn Cain worked all five innings in the circle, scattering six hits, two runs, seven strikeouts and a walk to improve to 17-4.
Wednesday's game, and all games at the DII World Series, are streaming live at
NJCAA.org/network for a fee. Tickets are $12/daily and on-site only at Choccolocco Park.
