Record-tying men's soccer season ends in penalty kicks

WICHITA, Kan. – A record-tying men's soccer season ended on Tuesday in the NJCAA National Tournament to Phoenix College in penalty kicks.

Scoreless through regulation and two overtime periods, the top-ranked Bears advanced 4-3 on penalties to reach the national semifinals. 

Jones tied the 2022 team with a school record for wins, finishing 16-3-3. 

In the tournament-opener on Monday against St. Louis, the Archers scored first, but Jones the final three goals to earn a 3-1 victory in pool play.

Felipe Alcantar Sam gave St. Louis a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute before Drew Raffaelle knotted the match at 1-1.

Matt Reed's team-high 19th goal pushed Jones ahead 2-1 in the 51st minute from Mario Novaku

Cade Thortis then put the finishing touches on a comeback win with a 69th minute header off a Reed service into the box.

Jones outshot St. Louis 18-14. Joshua Goodwin had three saves in the second half to earn the win.

Brax Rials and Goodwin combined for seven saves and a shutout in Tuesday's win and advance match against No. 1 Phoenix.

In penalties, Lucas Ekfeldt made his kick and Goodwin got the save to put Jones up 1-0. Andrew Pearce's attempt hit the post on Jones' second kick and the Bears would then make their next four to advance, 4-3.

Jones captured MACCC, NJCAA Region 23 and Gulf South District Championships during a fantastic run to Kansas.
