No. 15 Bobcats take Thursday trip to East Central

ELLISVILLE – The 15th-ranked Jones College Bobcats hope to continue positive momentum this week.

The Bobcats, riding a two-game winning streak, visit East Central for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff on Thursday at Bailey Stadium/Warrior Field. The game will air on jcbobcats.com/watch with Mark Easley and Chuck Robertson on the call.

Jones has picked up back-to-back wins over Holmes, 38-28, and then-No.9 Hinds, 31-21. The Bobcats are 4-2 overall, 1-2 in the MACCC South Division.

In last week's victory over the Eagles, quarterback Jevarion Glover (Amanda Elzy) and running back Ky'Yon Harris (Union) rushed for 121 and 114 yards, respectively. It is the second time this season for Jones to have two 100-yard plus rushers in a game.

Head coach Lytrel Pollard said that it is a credit to the offensive line.

"They have accepted the challenge that we issued that for us to be able to have a successful offense we have got to be able to run the ball," he said. "We were really good up front. We knew we were going to have to block them and I was proud of how physical we were."

Hinds piled up 546 yards of total offense with quarterback Jaylon Ruffin leading the way. He accounted for 425 yards, but the Bobcats limited him when they needed to and forced two key turnovers.

"We knew it was going to be up and down with him," Pollard said of Ruffin. "We might stop him and he might make a play against us. But we stood up when we had to. You can get all the yards in the world, but if you're not getting touchdowns that's the most important thing."

Bobcat punter Luke Stewart (Oak Grove) had an excellent game, averaging 43.5 yards on four punts with three going inside the 20-yard line.

"It was one of Luke's better days," he said. "I think he had three inside the 20 and that's makes it hard on them to drive over 80 yards on us."

Coach Jonathan Webster's Warriors won the division last season, but have struggled this season. East Central is currently 1-5 overall, 1-2 in division play. They own a win over Pearl River (37-27), but have lost to Northeast (24-13), No. 5 Northwest (29-10), Itawamba (23-14), No. 13 Hinds (48-2) and No. 4 Mississippi Gulf Coast (27-3).

Pollard knows the Bobcats cannot take anything for granted.

"I know Coach Webster will have his guys prepared," he said. "You can throw out the records each week in this league. We just have to go out and compete. We have to go out on the road after these last two games at home. The last time we went on the road (a 31-20 loss to Co-Lin) we lost and I don't like losing.

"We have to be great on offense and our defense has to travel and be great this week."

Currently in the division, Gulf Coast is 4-0 and Co-Lin is 3-1. Hinds is 2-1, while Jones, Southwest and East Central are 1-2. Pearl River is 0-4.

If the Bobcats can win out (they face Southwest and Pearl River in their final two games), then they would have a chance for postseason play.

Pollard knows what is at stake.

"We want to be in the conversation," he said. "We got those two losses early in the year, but if we win out we will be in the conversation. We know if we lose another game we are not going to be in the conversation. That's just the situation we are in right now."

The Bobcats will travel again next week going to Southwest for a 5 p.m. kickoff on Oct. 25. East Central goes to Co-Lin on Oct. 23.
