SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The season is over for the No. 4 Jones College Bobcats a little earlier than they had hoped.
Jones dropped a 7-3 decision to No. 9 Des Moines Area (Iowa) here Wednesday morning on Day 3 of the NJCAA Division II Softball World Series at Tyger River Park.
Jones ends the season at 41-15.
DMACC pitcher and Missouri signee Courtney Donahue carried a no-hitter until the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Bears struck for four runs in the second on four hits and two Bobcat errors and never looked back. Jones committed an uncharacteristic four errors in the loss, a season-high.
Trailing 6-0, the Bobcats got a single from
Elise Jackson, a two-run home run from
Jayden Sawyer and back-to-back doubles by
Emily Mizelle and
Makynlie Jones to make it 6-3. It was Sawyer's 29th home run of the season, a new single-season school record.
DMACC added a run in the top of the seventh and the Bobcats went in order to end the game.
Reanna Nieman went the whole way and took the loss. She allowed seven runs, just two earned, 11 hits, walked two and struck out six. She ends the year at 19-8.
Donahue allowed four hits, walked two and struck out 14 to up her record to 26-4.
Jones lost 4-1 to 13-seed Rock Valley (Illinois) on Tuesday and defeated No. 19-seed Bryant and Stratton (Virginia), 10-8, to move into another elimination game.
