FULTON – Jones' season came to a close Saturday afternoon at Itawamba in penalty kicks.
Tied 1-1 after regulation and through two overtime periods, Itawamba advanced, 4-3, on penalty kicks. They'll face No. 1 Northwest on Thursday in Ellisville in the NJCAA Region 23 Semifinals.
Sherline King scored the go-ahead goal for Jones with 12:17 to play in regulation but then the Bobcats gave up the game-tying goal 3:07 later on a defensive miscue.
Jones had two really good scoring chances in the 42nd minute when King fired a shot from the top of the 18 that was saved and then
Mary Grace Batson stepped over the ICC keeper but was blocked by a defender in the 49th to keep it scoreless.
Jones broke the stalemate in the 78th minute when
Hope Welsh took a throw-in in front of the Bobcat bench and tossed it towards the feet of King who scored to make it 1-0.
Three minutes later, Itawamba appeared to kick a ball long that was feet from rolling out of bounds, but
Gracyn White kicked it out of bounds that gave possession to ICC instead.
The ensuing throw-in seconds later went to the foot of Millie Webb who fired it from 30 yards out top shelf to tie the match.
In the second overtime, King sent one top shelf that was punched over the bar and
Riley Rolison hit one from 25 yards out that was also punched over the bar.
ICC connected on four of its five penalties, with one saved by White. Annabelle Holman had one save and one Bobcat shoot went 10 feet over the bar.
Jones will miss the national tournament for the first time since 2019.
