WESSON – Thursday's task was simple, win to stay alive in the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament.
Jones did just that, using a complete-game performance from
Nia Luckett in the circle and three-run home run from
Kathryn Smith to power the offense in a 7-2 victory over tournament host Co-Lin.
The Bobcats (44-11) will meet LSU Eunice (33-19) at 2:30 Friday, weather permitting, in another elimination game. Co-Lin will play Northeast in an elimination game at noon.
Trailing 2-1 after three, Smith's three-run shot to left sparked six unanswered runs for Jones.
Lauren Lindsey singled and
Carly Lewis doubled to lead off the bottom of the fourth and then Smith deposited her 11th home run of the year to left to make it 4-2.
Lindsay Henson hit a sac fly and
Sydney Pevey singled to plate two more and make it a 6-2 Jones lead through five.
Lindsey capped the scoring with a sac fly in the sixth.
Jones knocked out MACCC PItcher of the Year Cera Blanchard (25-5) after four innings. She allowed six runs on six hits and walked five.
Luckett was again solid in the circle, scattering seven hits, one earned run and four strikeouts to improve to 17-5.
Seven different Bobcats picked up a hit, led by two from Pevey.
