BATON ROUGE, La. – After a surprising, 3-2 extra-inning loss in the opener, No. 4 Jones flexed its muscles in a 13-2 run-rule win to split a makeup doubleheader against Baton Rouge on Thursday at Traction.
BRCC picked up its first-ever win over the Bobcats in game one. The series is now 24-1 in favor of Jones all-time.
The Bobcats (37-8) have a quick turnaround, traveling to Holmes on Friday to close out the regular season.
Baton Rouge 3, Jones 2 (8 inn.)
Back-to-back solo home runs by
Sarah Ballard and
Sydney Pevey tied the game at 2-2 in the third, and that's all the offense Jones could find.
Kristen Walker (1-1) went 7.1 solid innings, scattering six hits, three strikeouts and two earned runs and Marley Olivier was just as efficient on the other side for the Lady Bears in six innings.
With the game going to the international tiebreaker to start the eighth and a runner placed at second, Jones had two runners on but wasn't able to plate the go-ahead run.
In BRCC's half of the eighth, the runner placed at second would be sacrificed to third before Kristyn Lormand, the winning pitcher for the Bears, delivered the walk-off single.
Jones 13, Baton Rouge 2 (6 inn.)
The Bobcat bats would not be silenced in the finale, with all nine starters finishing with at least one hit in the run-rule victory.
Jones used a three-run fourth and six-run sixth to put the game away.
Nia Luckett and
Tia'Rain Saunders had three hits apiece and
Carly Lewis and Pevey both doubled.
Lindsay Henson stayed perfect on the year in the circle, improving to 8-0. She allowed four hits, two runs, struck out seven and walked six.
