ELLISVILLE – No. 3 Jones College allowed only one run in posting a MACCC sweep of Mississippi Delta here Thursday afternoon at Community Bank Park/Gwen Magee Field.
Hanna Zeitz (Clinton Christian Academy) tossed a one-hitter as the Bobcats beat MDCC 9-1 in six innings in game one. In game two,
Lindsay Henson (Lawrenceburg, Indiana) got the victory and went 3-for-3 at the plate, including a home run, as Jones won 11-0 in five innings.
Jones, 17-6 overall and 5-1 in the MACCC, hosts Meridian in a 4 p.m. doubleheader on March 23. Mississippi Delta, 7-15 and 2-4, visits No. 5 Itawamba on March 23.
Jones 9, Mississippi Delta 1 – 6 inn.
Zeitz (3-2) had nine strikeouts and issued only one walk in going all 6.0 innings.
Back-to-back RBI doubles by
Lauren Lindsey (Mobile, Alabama) and
Carly Lewis (Jackson Prep) gave Jones a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Aaliyah Dixon (Hillcrest Christian) had an RBI single and Lindsey drove in a run with a fielder's choice to make it 4-0 in the second.
After scoring two runs on two errors in the third, Dixon delivered another RBI single to put Jones up, 7-0.
The Trojans got an unearned run in the fifth and the Bobcats ended the game in the sixth on RBI singles by Lewis and
Taylor Duncan (Lake).
Lewis had a double and two singles with Dixon, Duncan and
Gabby Hoffman (Florence) getting two singles each. Lindsey had a double and
Tia'Rain Saunders (Choctaw Central) and
Sydney Pevey (Lawrence County) added singles.
Reilly Kate Lack singled for MDCC's only hit.
Starter Mia Pumila (2-8) went 2.2 innings, allowing seven runs, five hits and five walks and took the loss.
Jones 11, Mississippi Delta 0 – 5 inn.
The Bobcats sent 11 players to the plate and scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control.
Lindsey, Henson and Dixon had RBI singles in the inning, Pevey had an RBI double, Lewis drove in a run with a groundout and another run scored on a passed ball.
Henson and
Iris Farve (Clinton Christian Academy) had back-to-back home runs in the second to make it 8-0.
Duncan's sacrifice fly in the fourth made it 9-0 and
Kathryn Smith (Luling, Louisiana) had a two-run home run in the inning to end the scoring.
Henson pitched the first 3.0 innings, giving up two hits and recording four strikeouts as she upped her record to 4-0.
Kristen Walker (Leake Academy) went the final 2.0 innings, had one strikeout and allowed one hit.
Henson homered, doubled and singled with Pevey getting a double and a single. Farve and Smith homered and Dixon,
Skylar McLellan (Brandon), Lindsey, Lewis and
Madison Jones (South Jones) added singles.
Starter Emily Mcklemurry (0-2) went .2 innings, allowed six runs (five earned), four hits and walked three to take the loss.
Reese Woods singled twice for the Trojans and Lack had a single.
