Jones falls to Phoenix in national championship semifinals

EVANS, Ga. – Top-ranked Phoenix College scored a pair of second half goals and dodged several bullets from the Bobcats, as Jones fell 2-0 in Tuesday's national championship semifinal.

"The tournament was a brilliant experience for our girls, and we are very proud of the overall effort," head coach Dolores Deasley said. "The great thing for us is that we will have a full squad returning in a few weeks with a lot of experience now."

Jones ends the year 14-3. Phoenix moves on to play the winner of Holmes/Heartland in Wednesday's national championship.

Scoreless at the half, a Bobcat miscue in front of the box allowed the Bears to break through. With a Jones defender attempting to clear the ball, it instead hit right at the feet of Anacel Valenzuala-Acosta who scored to make it 1-0.

Jones had several chances to draw even over the next 10 minutes with solid attempts by Kendyl Terrell and Zylah Mulligan saved by Phoenix keeper Jennifer Alvillar.

Daizy Arrendondo gave the Bears a big insurance goal in the 80th minute, scoring off a rebound after a save by Danae Fowler.

Jones tried to get one back in the match's final minutes, but three consecutive shots by Mulligan, Natasha Keen and Morgan Durning were all denied.

Phoenix owned a 14-12 edge in shots and 9-5 advantage in corners.

Fowler ended with five saves and Alvillar had six in a clean sheet.

In Jones' first-ever trip to the national tournament, they had a great showing. The Bobcats defeated No. 10 Lake County 5-0 and No. 5 CCBC Essex 3-0 to make it to today's national semifinal.

"It's not over for these freshmen," Deasley continued. "We hope they come back hungry and ready to be back at the national tournament this fall. We also have a quality group of freshmen joining us, so we'll do it all over again."
