WICHITA, Kan. – Making its first-ever NJCAA Division II National Tournament appearance on Saturday, Jones had a bit of bad luck.
The Bobcats surrendered the game-winning goal with 46 seconds left on a misplayed ball in the box to drop a 2-1 decision to Louisburg.
"I thought we played well for the majority of the game, but unfortunately we gave up two really poor goals," head coach
Brendan Connolly said. "You can't win matches at this level giving up goals like that. We're really disappointed with the end result, but have to have a short-term memory. It's a quick turnaround for us and a great opportunity tomorrow to put ourselves in contention to get into the semifinals."
Jones had a six-match winning streak snapped to fall to 12-4. The Canes improved to 9-2-1.
The Bobcats will play Southeastern (Iowa) at 1 p.m. on Sunday to wrap up pool play. Louisburg will play Southeastern on Monday at 1 p.m.
Scoreless at the half in today's tournament-opener,
John Mark Rose found the back of the net in the 50th minute on a nice ball from
Adam Lynch.
Louisburg tied the match at 1-1 in the 74th minute on a goal by Santiago Romero.
Just when it looked like the match was headed to overtime, the bad break hit. A long ball into the box by Naoki Toyosawa bounced behind the keeper and allowed Jose Martinez to steal a goal with 46 ticks left.
Louisburg out-shot Jones 16-6, with
Peyton Wilbanks picking up nine saves.
