ELLISVILLE – After netting the game-winner Monday night to beat Copiah-Lincoln, sophomore
Chris Dempsey struck again for the Jones College Bobcats Thursday night.
Dempsey's goal with 27 seconds left helped No. 13 Jones top No. 6 Pearl River, 1-0, and get some revenge from a 2-1 double overtime loss in Poplarville.
The hard work of
John Mark Rose in the midfield paid off for Dempsey and the Bobcats in the 90th minute. Rose won the ball in PRCC territory and dribbled all the way into the box, sending it off to Dempsey who spun right and scored between the legs of John Bowman.
Jones dodged several bullets in the first half and was outplayed the opening 45 minutes, but went into half scoreless.
Peyton Wilbanks had three, key first half saves and Mohamed Diallo also hit the post and crossbar for the Wildcats.
Great work by
Elean Fajardo over 15 minutes of action in the second half and
Matt Burke eventually paid off for Jones with time winding down.
Rose subbed back into the match for Fajardo in the 86th minute and would deliver the assist to win the match less than four minutes later.
The teams finished with 14 shots, six saves and three corner kicks apiece. The match saw a combined 26 fouls and three yellow cards.
Jones will play its next two matches away from home on May 4 and 7 at Gulf Coast and Southwest Missisippi.
