ELLISVILLE – The Jones College Bobcats gave it their all here at Bobcat Soccer Field Sunday afternoon in the Region 23 Tournament championship game.
But they came up just a bit short.
LSU-Eunice edged the Bobcats, 4-2, in penalty kicks to claim the tournament championship. The game was tied 4-4 after regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods before the Bengals got the edge in penalty kicks.
Jones, 14-2-1, will now travel to face No. 4 ranked and Region 14 champion Tyler Junior College (Texas) on Saturday in an NJCAA South District playoff game. LSU-Eunice, 8-2-3, will host Northeast Texas, the Region 14 runnerup, on Saturday.
The winner of those games will go to the men's NJCAA Division I National Tournament Nov. 17-22 in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Jones had a strong start to Sunday's game.
Glenn Waters (Dungarvan, Ireland) scored at 8:36 for Jones. LSU-Eunice tied it at 30:00 when Devin Pathoumthong scored with James Bryant getting an assist.
The Bobcats took a 2-1 lead when Dalton Morgan (South Jones) scored at 34:46 with Thomas Carlile (Athgarvan, Ireland) on the assist. Jones made it 3-1 when Cris Rodrigo (Northwest Rankin) knocked it home on a free kick at 39:59.
But the Bengals tied it up quickly in the second half. Cade Trahan scored at 46:03 and Pathoumthong made it 3-3 at 47:58 on an assist by Trahan.
LSU-Eunice took a 4-3 lead when Adrian Franco scored at 64:39.
But the Bobcats tied it at 4-4 on a Steven Caston (Laurel) goal and Carlile assist at 65:25.
Both teams had opportunities over the final 25 minutes of regulation and the two overtime periods. But neither team could break through.
In the penalty kick session, LSU-Eunice went first and Franco put it in the net. Lucas Middleton (Hemsworth, England) led off for Jones, but his kick sailed over the goal.
The Bengals made it 2-0 on a Timon Zech goal, but Jones answered with goalkeeper Callum Harley (Whitley Bay, England) finding the net to make it 2-1.
Axell Feuntes then scored for the Bengals to make it 3-1. Waters then tried a shot, but it was blocked by Bengal keeper Sean JeanFreau.
Harley then blocked Pathoumthong's effort and Rodrigo scored for the Bobcats to make it 3-2.
But Angelo Fabricio put the next shot into the net to clinch it, 4-2.
The Jones Lady Bobcats beat LSU-Eunice 8-1 Saturday night to win the Region 23 title. They will travel to either Tyler or Navarro (Texas) later this week for the NJCAA South District crown. The winner of that game will head to the women's NJCAA Division I National Tournament Nov. 17-22 in Foley, Alabama.
