Box Score BOONEVILLE – The 7^th-ranked Jones College Bobcats scored three touchdowns in less than five minutes of the first quarter and went on to defeat Northeast Mississippi 40-27 here Thursday night at Tiger Stadium/Bill Ward Field.
The win sets up an MACJC South Division showdown next week.
The Bobcats, 6-1 overall, will host No. 20 Copiah-Lincoln at 2 p.m. on Oct. 20 for Homecoming. Both the Bobcats and Wolves are 4-0 in the division and the winner will clinch the top seed going into the MACJC playoffs. The game will air on www.jcjc.tv and Jones College Facebook Live with Mark Easley and Chris Robinson on the call. The game will not be on WLAU-FM, 99.3, because of a conflict with the Ole Miss vs. Auburn game.
Once again, the Bobcats utilized all facets of the game to post a victory.
Jones got a punt return touchdown from Immanuel Jones (Amory) and Enrique Whaley (Stone) scored on a fake punt. Another successful fake punt set up a field goal.
A pass interception by Daylen Gill (Louisville) set up a touchdown and another interception by Fred Peters (Columbia) in the end zone stopped a threat.
Marquez Bembry (Atlanta, Georgia) had eight tackles, Peters had six, Nick Anderson (Vicksburg) had five and DaShawn Crawford (Bay Springs) had four.
Kalyn Grandberry (Memphis, Tennessee) rushed for 112 yards. Quarterback Fred Barnum (Warren Central) was 9-of-13 for 119 yards. Jones had seven catches for 68 yards and Gabe Douglas (Denton, Texas) had two receptions for 117 yards and a score.
The Bobcats took the game's opening kickoff and promptly went from its own 40-yard line to a first and goal at the Tiger 2-yard line.
But Northeast held and took over on downs.
Jones then forced a three and out and took over at the Northeast 33 following a punt. Seven plays later, Donte Edwards (Mobile, Alabama) scored on a 2-yard run. Cristofer Thompson's extra point gave the Bobcats a 7-0 lead with 5:13 to play in the opening period.
The Tigers then drove into Jones' territory, but turned it over on downs at the Jones' 33.
On the very next play, quarterback Stetson Bennett (Blackshear, Georgia) found Douglas behind the defense for a 67-yard touchdown pass. Thompson's kick made it 14-0 with 2:31 to play in the first quarter.
Northeast would have to punt again on its next possession.
This time, Jones took the point at his own 36 and ran it back 64 yards for a touchdown. Thompson's extra point was good and just like that, Jones was up 21-0 with :57 left in the first quarter.
On its next possession, Jones drove from its own 15 to the Northeast 48 where they faced a 4^th and 10. Jones ran a fake punt and upback Davis Harrison (Lamar School) tossed a 25-yard pass to Nataurean Watts to give the Bobcats a first down at the Tiger 23.
Eventually, Thompson would boot a 22-yard field goal and Jones led 24-0 with 8:44 to play in the first half.
The Tigers struck quickly in the second half.
Northeast took the kickoff and went 75 yards in three plays. Quarterback Zac Oden connected with Kortlon Hubbard for a 68-yard touchdown pass. Michael Baugus made the conversion and it was 24-7 with 13:52 to play in third quarter.
Two possessions later, the Bobcats drove from their own 15 to the Tigers' 14 where the drive stalled. Thompson would come in and make a 31-yard field goal to give the Bobcats a 27-7 lead with 8:12 left in the third quarter.
Northeast would take the kickoff and drive 90 yards in 10 plays, aided by a couple of pass interference calls.
Zykeris Mosley scored from a yard out and Baugus' extra point cut the lead to 27-14 with 6:00 to play in the third quarter.
The Bobcats would take the kickoff and fumble the ball to Northeast on the first play of the next possession. But Gill would come up with an interception near his own 40 and return it to the Tiger 32.
Eight plays later, Bennett scored on a 2-yard keeper with 1:09 left in the third quarter. The pass attempt for a two-point conversion failed, the Bobcats would lead 33-14.
Two possessions later, the Tigers intercepted a Bobcat pass and returned it to the Jones 6. But two plays after that, Peters picked off a Northeast pass in the end zone and returned it out to his own 27.
Jones moved to the Tiger 28, but eventually turned it over on downs.
Northeast, helped by two pass interference calls, would go 72 yards in eight plays for a touchdown. Zykeris Mosley scored on a 2-yard run. A mishandled snap denied the extra point attempt, but the Tigers were with 33-20 with 5:05 left in the game.
Jones recovered the onside kick and took over at the Northeast 47.
Three plays later, the Bobcats faced a fourth and 3 at the Tiger 40. Jones lined up in punt formation and Whaley would get the handoff on a reverse and race the distance untouched for a touchdown. Thompson's extra point gave the Bobcats a 40-20 lead with 3:24 to play.
The Tigers took over at its own 35 after the kickoff. Northeast would go 65 yards in nine plays. Backup quarterback Reed Collins hit Sam Williams – who normally plays defensive end – from 4 yards out for a touchdown. The PAT by Baugus ended the scoring with just :23 left.
Northeast, 1-6 overall, travels to Northwest on Oct. 18.
