ELLISVILLE – Jones County Junior College was solid all the way around in gaining its first victory of the season here Thursday night at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field.
DeShawn Smith (Brooksville, Florida) rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns and Scott Phillips (South Jones) ran for 53 yards and two scores as the Bobcats blitzed Mississippi Delta, 51-10.
After spotting the Trojans a field goal to start the game, the Bobcats roared to a 37-3 halftime lead. JCJC then scored quickly to start the second half and the game went to a running clock (more than 35-point deficit) the rest of the way.
Quarterback Chris Weaver (Bay Minette, Alabama) was 8-of-11 for 124 yards and one touchdown and wide receiver Davis Harrison (Lamar School) threw a 20-yard touchdown pass on a trick play. Wide receiver Harry Ballard (Florissant, Missouri) had three catches for 97 yards, including a 48-yard touchdown, and tight end Chancie Tidwell (Clinton) had catches for 30 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown.
Jalon Scott (Perry Central) had a pass interception, while Jordyn Bowlin (Starkville) and Elijah Rogers (Jackson Callaway) had fumble recoveries.
The Bobcats outgained the Trojans, 357-152 and limited MDCC to 5 yards rushing.
MDCC started the game off quickly.
They took the opening kickoff and methodically moved from their own 23-yard line to a second and goal at the Bobcat 6. But quarterback Tyrique McAfee had a fumbled snap and was dropped by Bowlin for a 7-yard loss. McAfee's third down pass into the end zone was incomplete.
Laurel's Harris Hauenstein then booted a 30-yard field goal to give the Trojans a 3-0 lead with 10:10 left in the first quarter.
The Bobcats answered with a 66-yard, 11-play drive on its first possession.
Phillips ended the drive with a 4-yard scoring run. Mike Kroeze's (Madison Central) extra point gave JCJC a 7-3 lead with 6:02 left in the first quarter.
After a 3-and-out, the Bobcats took over at its own 39.
Three plays later, Smith took a handoff and raced 39 yards for a touchdown. Kroeze's kick made it 14-3 with 3:42 left in the first quarter.
On the next series, the Bobcats forced MDCC into a fourth and 20 at its own 1.
Jonnas Spivey (Bay Springs) returned a punt 10 yards to give JCJC possession at the Trojan 24.
Two plays later, quarterback Detric Hawthorn (Collins) threw a backwards pass to Harrison. Harrison, who is listed as JCJC's emergency quarterback, then tossed a 20-yard scoring strike to Tidwell. The extra point attempt failed, but the Bobcats led 20-3 with 1:34 left in the first quarter.
Two possessions later, Jones drove 55 yards in three plays with Weaver connecting with Ballard on a hitch route for a 48-yard touchdown pass. Kroeze's conversion made it 27-3 with 11:11 left in the second quarter.
Midway through the quarter, Bowlin recovered a fumble at the Trojan 35.
Four plays later, Kroeze drilled a 48-yard field goal to put the Bobcats ahead 30-3 with 5:24 left in the first half.
On MDCC's next possession with sacks, tackles for loss and penalties, the Trojans would eventually face a fourth and 48 at its own 2.
JCJC would take over at the Delta 29 after the punt. Three plays later, Smith bolted in from 11 yards away with 1:14 left in the half. Kroeze's kick gave the Bobcats a 37-3 lead.
The Bobcats took the second half kickoff and went 73 yards in six plays. A 39-yard pass from Weaver to Ballard was a big play in the drive. Phillips ended the march with a 10-yard run. Kroeze's extra point made it 44-3 with 12:24 left in the third quarter.
On JCJC's next possession, the Bobcats were forced to punt. However, Delta fumbled the kick and Rogers recovered at the MDCC 5.
On the next play, Rashaud Green (Bassfield) ran into the end zone for the Bobcats' final touchdown of the evening. Kroeze's kick made it 51-3 with 2:40 left in the third quarter.
MDCC would then move 80 yards in 12 plays. Marquvius Kirkham scored on a 1-yard plunge and Hauenstein's extra point ended the scoring at the 2:35 mark.
JCJC takes its longest road trip of the season next week when they go to Clarksdale to meet Coahoma at 7 p.m. on Sept. 14.
MDCC, 0-2, hosts Holmes on Sept. 14.
