PERKINSTON – The 8
th-ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats used a punishing ground game to beat Mississippi Gulf Coast 38-24 here Saturday at A.L. May Stadium/George Sekul Field.
Sophomore
Scott Phillips (South Jones) rushed 31 times for 154 yards and three touchdowns, while sophomore
DeShawn Smith (Brooksville, Florida) carried 17 times for 138 yards. Quarterback
Chris Weaver (Bay Minette, Alabama) rushed for two touchdowns. Wide receiver
Kendall Parham (Oak Grove) had eight catches for 80 yards.
JCJC ended the game with 458 yards of total offense with 363 of those yards coming on the ground.
On defense, backs
Fred Peters (Columbia) and
Jonathan Haynes (Ray Brooks) had 9 tackles each, while linebacker
Derric Hawthorn (Collins) had 7 tackles and 1 tackle for loss. Tackle
Jordan Beaton (Harrison Central) had 6 tackles, 1 sack, 1 tackle for loss and 1 forced fumble. End
Brandon Young (West Jones) had 4 tackles and 2 tackles for loss, while end
Semaj Thomas (Fort Worth, Texas) had 5 tackles and 1 tackle for loss. End
Dashawn Crawford (Bay Springs) had 3 tackles and 1 tackle for loss and linebacker

JCJC is now 8-1 overall and captures the MACJC South Division title outright at 6-0.
The Bobcats, winners of eight straight games, will host No. 5 East Mississippi at 1 p.m. on Nov. 4 in the semifinals of the MACJC playoffs. It will be JCJC's first playoff appearance since they last won the division championship in 2013.
The Lions beat JCJC 47-34 in the season opener on Aug. 31 in Scooba.
No. 7 Hinds travels to No. 3 Northwest on Nov. 4 in the other MACJC semifinal matchup.
The MACJC championship game will be played on Nov. 11.
MGCCC started Saturday's game by driving all the way to the JCJC 9-yard line. However, the Bobcats held and a 26-yard field goal attempt was off to the left and no good.
The Bobcats took over at their own 20-yard line and proceeded to drive 80 yards in 12 plays for a touchdown. Phillips did the honors from 3 yards away and
Mike Kroeze's (Madison Central) extra point gave Jones a 7-0 lead with 8:31 left in the first quarter. A 29-yard pass from Weaver to Parham was the big play in the drive.
The Bulldogs came back and drove to the JCJC 19. The Bobcats held and a Bulldog 37-yard field goal attempt was no good.
MGCCC would get on the scoreboard on its next possession when Larry Sisson connected with Zack Farrar with a 66-yard touchdown pass. Mason Hunt's conversion tied it at 7-7 with 3:29 left in the first quarter.
JCJC would take the lead for good early in the second quarter when Phillips scored on an 8-yard run to end a 60-yard, 10-play drive. Kroeze's PAT made it 14-7 with 9:16 left in the first half.
The Bobcat defense would come up big on MGCCC's next possession when
Rayshon Marcel (Moss Point) picked up a fumble at the Bulldog 32-yard line and ran it down to the 10. Two plays later, Weaver scored on a 6-yard run. Kroeze's extra point made it 21-7 with 7:53 left in the first half.
Two possessions later, Hunt would boot a 30-yard field goal to trim the lead to 21-10 with 1:30 left in the first half.
But the Bobcats would end the half on a high note.
Smith returned the kickoff 31 yards to the Bobcat 34. Facing a third and 8 at the 36, Smith took a handoff and raced 55 yards to the MGCCC 9. Four plays later, Kroeze kicked a 22-yard field goal on the last play of the half to give Jones a 24-10 lead.
The Bobcats took the second half kickoff and put together an impressive, 79-yard, 14-play drive for a score. Phillips went in from 3 yards away and Kroeze's conversion gave JCJC a 31-10 lead with 9:24 left in the third quarter.
It stayed that way until the fourth quarter when MGCCC's Deandre Torrey scored on a 16-yard run. Hunt's extra point made it 31-17 with 12:40 remaining.
The Bobcats' final score came when they took over on downs at the MGCCC 40.
Ten plays later, Weaver scored on a 1-yard run and Kroeze's extra point made it 38-17 with 2:40 left.
MGCCC ended the scoring when Sisson connected with Torrance Gibson from 23 yards away. Hunt added the extra point with 1:19 left.
The Bulldogs finished the game with 450 yards. Torrey had 20 carries for 161 yards.
MGCCC ends the season at 5-4 overall, 3-3 in division play.
